A Woman’s Harrowing Experience on a United Airlines Flight
A woman has recently gone viral on social media after sharing a distressing story about an incident that occurred during a flight with United Airlines. Her account has sparked widespread discussion and raised questions about how airlines handle such situations.
The incident took place on a flight from Colorado to Los Angeles. The woman, known as Brookelyn Rose on TikTok, shared her experience in a video that details the unsettling events that unfolded during the journey. According to her, she has been trying to get a response from the airline for months.
What Happened on the Flight?
Rose claims that a visibly intoxicated passenger boarded the plane and initially sat in the emergency exit row, even though he wasn’t assigned to that seat. She says the staff asked him to move, and he then chose an aisle seat in her row.
From the beginning, the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Rose described how she could smell the alcohol on him and noticed that he was slurring his words. Initially, she tried to ignore him and focus on reading a book. However, the man repeatedly turned toward her while wearing sunglasses, as if watching her throughout the flight.
Eventually, the man started speaking to her. He asked what book she was reading and then began hitting on her. Rose told him she was married, hoping to end the conversation. The man allegedly responded by saying he was married too, and then showed her photos of his family while leaning into her personal space.
The Situation Escalates
As the flight continued, the situation became more uncomfortable. During beverage service, the man asked for a rum and Coke, but the flight attendant refused and offered a regular Coke instead. Rose appreciated this decision.
However, she claims she tried to signal to the flight attendant that she was uncomfortable. She looked at the attendant, hoping they would understand her discomfort. According to Rose, the flight attendant didn’t seem to pick up on it.
Later, during snack service, the man asked for two bags of pretzels and tossed both into her lap. Rose said she didn’t want the pretzels and told him not to come near her again. She tried to catch the attention of the flight attendants through eye contact, hoping someone would move the man to another seat. There were empty seats elsewhere on the plane, but no one took action.
It Gets Physical
According to Rose, the situation escalated when the man reached over and touched her arm. She immediately told him not to do that, using a stern but smiling tone. The man allegedly responded by saying she looked sad.
Rose tried to disengage and continue reading, but she eventually pressed the call button above her seat to get help from a flight attendant. Because of her height, she had to stand up slightly to reach it. According to her, the man leaned toward her and pressed the button himself, making her feel trapped in her seat.
The Most Alarming Moment
The most alarming moment happened during the plane’s descent into Los Angeles. When the pilot announced the initial descent, the man misheard the message and believed the plane would land within minutes. He started losing his mind, yelling that the plane was going down and leaning over her toward the window. He wasn’t buckled in and grabbed her arm, shaking it.
Rose shouted for him to get his hands off her, and other passengers clearly heard the exchange but did not intervene. She says people turned their heads but did nothing.
After the Plane Landed
After landing, the passenger quickly exited the plane. Only then did other passengers approach Rose, expressing concern and offering support. Some passengers told her they would report the situation to the flight crew. However, Rose claims the situation became confusing once authorities got involved.
She says some passengers described the incident as “sexual harassment,” while she believes the physical contact and intimidation were the primary issues. Police were also informed about the situation.
Despite everything that happened, Rose claims she remained empathetic toward the passenger, suggesting it may have been his first flight.
What Happened After the Incident?
Rose says she has spent months communicating with the airline and claims she has received no compensation or flight credit for the incident. She says the airline didn’t even give her a flight credit, stating that it wasn’t in their policy.
Frustrated with the lack of response, Rose decided to share her story publicly online, believing it was the only way to get things done.
Public Reaction
In the comments section, many users suggested that she didn’t advocate for herself enough. One user wrote, “You need to understand, people don’t want to get involved as it could have been a very bad situation for everyone in the air. You should have stood your ground and asked for someone to move him or yourself.”
Others defended her position, with one writing, “Someone should have pressed a button and let an attendant know for sure! I am not sure why they didn’t as that was the right thing to do.”
Does United Airlines Refund Flights Due to Harassment?
On its refunds page, United Airlines states that passengers can request refunds in limited situations, such as if a flight was delayed, if a passenger purchased a seat but was moved to one of lesser value, or if they were dissatisfied with add-ons they purchased.
However, there are unprecedented situations. In 2017, when United Airlines forcibly removed a man from an overbooked flight by dragging him across the aisle, every passenger on that flight received a refund.
