Like millions of people in the U.S. and around the world, discovering the nation’s most breathtaking attractions, its63 national parks, is high on my list of travel destinationsbucket list. I had reached several of the major ones—the Great Smoky Mountain National Park,Yellowstone, the Rockies, Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. I’ve even stayed at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon with a heavily packed backpack (tip—never let anyone, not even your husband, handle your packing), an experience that was more challenging than any of the 10 marathons I’ve completed in my life.
But I still hadn’t been to Yosemite, thesixth most-visited national parkin the countryside. So when I had the opportunity to go on a short 4-day trip to Northern California’s area known for giant sequoias, granite cliffs, and breathtaking waterfalls, and to stay atTenaya at Yosemite—extremely convenient to the park—I tied my hiking boots and boarded a plane.
I was somewhat disappointed that our short visit didn’t give us enough time to explore the park on foot, but we still managed to fully experience the Yosemite scenery and see many of the key attractions through a luxury van tour (more about that later). I definitely plan to return someday—and I promise, I…willreturn!—I’ll make sure to reserve a guided hike directly through Tenaya. The resort provides tours to some of the park’s most beautiful locations, suitable for guests with different fitness levels, ranging from easy to challenging.

Location: How near is Tenaya to Yosemite National Park?
Tenaya in Yosemite is just a 2-mile drive from the South Entrance of Yosemite, accessible by personal vehicle, resort shuttle, or tour service. There are only a few places to stay within the park, but securing a booking is very challenging during the6ththe most-visited National Park in the nation. However, for families and groups of friends seeking a variety of activities and accommodation choices, it might be more suitable than the restricted options available within the park.
There are four additional entries to the park, but the South Entrance provides convenient access to famous locations such as the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, Glacier Point—which delivers breathtaking views of Half Dome—Bridalveil Falls, and Yosemite Valley. Wawona, a historically significant region approximately 10 miles from the entrance, features walking paths leading to Chilnualna Falls.

Accommodations: Main Lodge, Bungalows, or Explorer Tents?
Unless you’re someone who loves camping and sees a tent and sleeping bag as must-haves for an ideal National Park visit, it’s difficult to picture anyone who wouldn’t find the ideal place to stay at Tenaya in Yosemite.
The resort is centered around the 244-room Main Lodge, offering a more conventional lodging choice for visitors and serving as the main area for all resort activities. The cozy, large rooms were updated in 2024, showcasing warm wood finishes, natural hues, and uniquely designed, handmade, and regionally influenced furniture that reflects the Arts and Crafts style from the early 1900s.
The impressive entrance hall featuring a soaring cathedral ceiling, where you can find livemusicIn the evenings, it features a large rock fireplace and several areas designed for gatherings and conversation. Guests can easily reach dining choices, hotel facilities including a spa and gym, and unique features like a game room and regular events such as S’mores Night.

The 53 Cottage Rooms & Suites, designed in a townhouse style, provide an alternative accommodation choice for park visitors. Located just a short walk through the sugar pines and cedars from the lodge, these cottages are great for guests seeking extra space and seclusion. With fireplaces, porches, and outdoor areas, they offer comfortable places to unwind and socialize, making them perfect for multi-generational families or trips with friends, as well as those who prefer a quieter, more private setting.

I was deeply inspired by my time in the large, two-bedroom Explorer Cabin. Located a 10-minute wooded walk from the lodge, there are 50 Explorer Cabins that consist of 500-square-foot, stylish, contemporary spaces similar to a tiny home neighborhood, offering nearly independent living, complete with kitchenettes that include generous refrigerators/freezers and microwaves andcoffeeCraftsmen-style homes and comfortable living rooms featuring fireplaces. Features such as bunk beds in the second bedroom and shower/tub combinations in the bathroom are ideal for families.
I was longing for my husband and someone in their 20s.sonDuring my solo stay in a high-end Explorer Cabin featuring a king-sized bed in the main room (along with a connected balcony that offers a view of a forest stream) and a cozy queen bed in the second bedroom. Actually, the layout was so appealing that I’m keeping it in mind in case we ever decide to purchase land near a lake to build a home—and definitely for a future family visit to Tenaya at Yosemite. We saw families relaxing around various firepits scattered among the cabins.

Although the Explorer Cabins are a short distance from the lodge, guests can enjoy a snack, quick continental breakfast, or coffee at the Explorer Clubhouse, which is conveniently situated between the cabins. (The clubhouse is currently being renovated and is expected to reopen in April 2026, just in time for the summer season.) Additionally, golf cart service is available from the cabins to the lodge upon request at the front desk, making it easier for those who prefer not to walk or have mobility challenges.

Amenities, Perks and Activities
Although Yosemite is the main attraction, there are numerous activities available for all guests right at the resort, both inside and outside. Those seeking adventure can picture themselves scaling Half-Dome while climbing the 18-foot wall located on the front lawn of the resort, try their hand at hitting the bullseye at the archery range deep in the forest, or take part in a guided nature walk led by one of the many staff members who are well-versed in the local plants and wildlife.
Guests can unwind at one of the three outdoor pools, or enjoy a swim in the indoor pool throughout the year, which occasionally offers a “dive-in movie” experience. We observed groups playingboard gamesFrom a variety available at rustic, long tables in the lodge lobby following our evening meal. A must-experience tradition is the daily campfire “S’morgasbord,” offering the classic gooey treat that everyone adores.

Bicycles can be rented for a cost—we opted for an electric bike and rode it right through the woods next to the property—and you have the option to book a unique guided night hike for your group to view the stars. Although we couldn’t fully enjoy the beauty of the night sky because of the clouds, the few glimpses we had of the Big and Little Dipper inspired me to attempt it again on a clear night during my next visit.
Dining Choices: Ranging from Gourmet Restaurants to Pizza Places
Tenaya in Yosemite provides an excellent selection of dining choices suitable for all, ranging from families with small children to couples enjoying a special event.
Jackalope’s Bar & Grillhas a relaxed atmosphere perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. However, I must mention that although the burgers, other handheld items, and substantial lunch and dinner dishes like Roasted Half Chicken and Herb Crusted Salmon are good choices, my favorite meal at Jackalope was breakfast.
Due to our busy schedule, I used the quick grab-and-go choices at the Explorer Clubhouse for breakfast in the mornings until my last day, when I had a lengthy travel day ahead. I managed to get some nourishment from scrambled eggs, premium cheeses, and fresh fruit, as well as the restaurant’s famous lavash flatbreads. Additional choices featured self-serve waffles, baconand sausage, oatmeal, and cold cereals, along with a variety of baked goods. Special mention to the Little Explorer dinner menu for children, not only for an excellent range of options (broccoliand beef and chicken teriyaki along with the regular burgers, pasta, and chicken strips) but highly imaginative, hands-on desserts such as Paint-a-Bear (a teddy bear-shaped Rice Krispies treat with chocolate, strawberryand peach “paint” sauces for the children to use as they like) and a DIY-style Design-a-Cupcake, featuring frosting and sprinkles.
At Embers, the resort’s upscale dining establishment, our group was given a variety of the restaurant’s top dishes, presented in a family-style manner. The meal was absolutely amazing—from the Wild Mushroom & Truffle Flatbread (there’s a flatbread motif here) starter to the Pan-Seared Scallops, Shrimp Pappardelle, and Wild Mushroom & Grilled Asparagus Risotto (I know… going back to themushroomsbut they were extremely good), the menu was filled with popular choices. I don’t eat meat but my friends really enjoyed the New York stripsteak, and even though our stomachs were stretched, we all found space for at least a bite of the chef’s famous Warm English Sticky Toffee Pudding, a dense, moist date cake served with caramel sauce and a side of whipped cream.
The Lodge houses Parkside Deli, offering quick grab-and-go coffees, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, along with a variety of drinks, yogurt, and other snacks. This made it convenient for us to enjoy a small bite before our busy days started.
People residing in the cottages can easily reach Timberland Pizzeria, which, besides their cheesypies, provides sandwiches, salads, and pastas—ideal for a takeout evening at home following a long day of hiking, sightseeing, and other pursuits.
Ascent Spa & Wellness
Nothing brings me more joy than an energetic vacation that gets me moving and then lets me unwind with a massage or facial. Ascent Spa & Wellness, located within the Main Lodge, provides numerous free amenities for guests looking to relax—such as steam rooms and saunas, a calming lounge, and a well-equipped gym.
I joined a complimentary yoga class led by an instructor who clearly had a lot of experience and had recently moved to the area from Los Angeles. The session was exactly what my body and soul needed. Besides standard yoga postures, we ended the class with a sound bowl.meditation, which was so calming that I nearly fell asleep surrounded by the gentle sounds and vibrations.
With extra charges, guests have the option to reserve a private yoga session or enjoy relaxing and deep-tissue massages for one person or two, or try an exclusive Immune-Boost Massage that includes a hot stone treatment (my favorite!) andessential oilsthat help boost the immune system. The small selection of facial treatments includes the Eminence Custom Organic Facial, which utilizes the brand’s high-end product line. It was my first experience with the brand, and I really enjoyed the opulent Lavender Age-Corrective Night Eye Cream along with other products I tried.

Touring the Park
We traversed Yosemite with the assistance of theYosemite 360 ToursExclusive tour service, accessible via the Tenaya concierge. As we approached the park, there was a short delay at the entrance before we could get in—nothing compared to the long queues that occur during the peak months of June and July, as our guide mentioned. (We were there in September, which is a less busy time for visitors.)

Not only did the comfortable Ford vans, featuring large windows and a spacious skylight for ideal views of trees and mountains, make the journey effortless, but our guide was also a valuable source of knowledge and fun as we headed to see Yosemite’s famous spots such as Bridalveil Falls and Half Dome. She had spent her childhood in the park, being the daughter of a stunt rider inWesternswho moved from LA to Yosemite after several visits and eventually took over the stables that had previously housed 500 horses for leisure riding and National Park Service monitoring in Yosemite Valley. She gave us a unique perspective on the park, having even gone to elementary school right in the heart of the park, which offerseducationfor kids of National Park Service and concession company staff.
Is Yosemite’s Tenaya suitable for pets?
Being a devoted pet owner, I was pleased to learn that Tenaya allows dogs with a flat charge, covering up to two pets. You can reserve a Fido-Friendly or Deluxe Pampered Pet package, which features, along with other services, the pet fee, accommodation, waste bags, a comfortable dog bed for your stay, and a toy for your furry companion.
The resort provides pet-sitting and dog-walking options, along with a space where dogs can play off-leash. The resort’s Pet Concierge is available to assist you in organizing activities that are suitable for your dog within the resort and the surrounding park area.
The Judgment: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Ideal Users
I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll say it once more: it’s challenging to identify any negative aspects of staying at Tenaya in Yosemite. However, I’ll proceed to summarize my genuine evaluation of the resort.
Pros
- Amazing range of accommodation choices, from the more conventional Lodge to the Explorer Cabins to the Cottage Rooms.
- A variety of dining options, including quick-service and relaxed settings, as well as formal occasions, and everything in between.
- Access to and standard of in-resort facilities and events, particularly for families (including those with pet companions).
- Close to Yosemite National Park.
- Exceptional focus on every aspect, including the decoration and small touches such as s’mores by the fire, board games available in the lobby, and additional amenities for pets and their owners.
- The level of dedication and energy demonstrated by the staff, such as golf cart operators, front desk personnel, servers, yoga instructors, spa employees, hiking guides, and tour guides.
Cons
- Guests staying in the Cottages and Explorer Cabins will need to walk to the Lodge to reach most of the full-service dining choices and activities. However, families with young children, individuals with mobility challenges, or those who prefer not to walk can arrange for golf cart transport to and from the area. While there may be some waiting time, planning ahead ensures that you can easily secure your dinner reservations, spa appointments, or tour pickups.
- During peak season, the queue to enter Yosemite’s South Entrance may stretch anywhere from one to two hours—sometimes even more on weekends and holidays. Naturally, this is beyond the control of the Tenaya team. Our guide recommended arriving before 7:30 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to experience shorter lines. She also advised visiting the park in May, when the valley is starting to flower and waterfalls are active due to the spring thaw, before the busy period of June through August.
Who is Tenaya at Yosemite Best For
- Anyone seeking luxurious, cozy accommodations near the park
- Multigenerational family gatherings
- Social circles that enjoy adventurous getaways with some luxury added in
- Families looking to cultivate an appreciation for nature, the outdoors, and the environment in their kids
I have visited several of the most well-known National Parks—backpacking in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, and taking day trips to a few others. I have also camped at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon after hiking down with a heavy backpack, an experience that was more challenging than any of the 10 marathons I’ve completed. Although I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything, I prefer sleeping under a roof in a comfortable bed and enjoying the hospitality that Tenaya Lodge in Yosemite provides. I will definitely return with my family—just wait and see.
