The Utica Saint Patrick’s Day Parade: A Celebration of Heritage and Community
The Utica Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is more than just a festive event; it is a source of extraordinary civic pride and passion. This celebration honors Irish history and heritage while showcasing the community’s commitment to welcoming immigrants and embracing ethnic diversity. It is a testament to the generations of residents who have contributed to making Utica a vibrant and inclusive place.
According to the parade committee, the event is famously the third largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the State of New York. It trails only two densely populated downstate fetes, such as New York City’s parade, which is also the largest in the country. The parade has become a beloved tradition that draws people from all walks of life to celebrate together.
The parade route winds through the heart of Utica’s historic downtown and into its Varick Street community, home of the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley (ICCMV). This area is surrounded by neighborhood Irish public houses that open their doors to share their cultural traditions with the community. On “Parade Day,” these pubs come alive with the spirit of camaraderie, as the community gathers to toast to each other and the blessings of friendship.
