Driftwood is incredibly tiny, with a population of just 140 people, according to World Population Review. The town’s history dates back to the 1880s when it served as a supply center for nearby farms and ranches. By the 1890s, Driftwood had churches, a post office, a school, a cotton gin, and a general store. Though its population has fluctuated over the years, reaching a low of just 10 people in 1925, it has steadily grown over time.

How to Get to Driftwood

Getting to Driftwood is relatively straightforward. From San Antonio, take I-35 north toward Kyle, then follow Ranch to Market Road 150 into Driftwood. The drive takes about an hour and 45 minutes. If you’re coming from Austin, head south on I-35 and follow similar directions. While the roads can be curvy, it’s easy to navigate.

Things to Do in Driftwood

Driftwood may lack a traditional main street, but it offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and exploration. Camp Ben McCullough, located off Ranch to Market Road 1826, is a popular spot for camping and RV stays. Nightly rates range from $30 to $40, and the area becomes more lush during the summer months when Onion Creek has higher water levels.

For those who prefer a more leisurely approach, driving along Ranch to Market Road 1826, Ranch to Market Road 150, and Elder Hill Road offers stunning views of the natural surroundings. Along the way, you might come across roadside vendors selling local honey, handmade knives, or hides, as well as animals grazing peacefully among wildflowers.

One notable landmark is the old Texaco store at the corner of Elder Hill Road and RM 150. This unassuming building has a rich history, serving as a gas station in the 1980s and later as the studio of photographer Dan Winters. The store was recently vacated by Winters, who had been there for 26 years.

Another popular spot is the Driftwood Axe House & Bar, which replaced a baseball-themed sports bar. The venue hosts a variety of events, including axe throwing, open mic nights, poker tournaments, and sports watch parties. Located just off RM 150, it’s close to several other attractions.

No visit to Driftwood would be complete without experiencing Salt Lick BBQ, a family-owned restaurant that has been a staple for decades. Founded in 1967 by Scott Roberts’ father, Thurman, the restaurant serves mouth-watering brisket, sausage, pork ribs, turkey, chicken, and even bison ribs. The vinegar-based barbecue sauce is a must-try, and the massive limestone pit where the food is cooked is a sight to behold.

If you’re looking for live music and a laid-back atmosphere, Hays City Store & Ice House on RM 150 is a great choice. Originally a gas station in the 1980s, it has evolved into a full-service restaurant and bar featuring scratch-made Texas comfort food, handcrafted cocktails, and a wide selection of local beers. The ice house, added in 2017, is perfect for enjoying a warm spring day.

For coffee lovers, Sonder Coffee Lounge is a must-visit. Tucked on La Ventana Parkway off Elder Hill Road, the café features a literary-inspired interior with book pages on the ceiling, plants on the walls, and a cozy ambiance. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a vanilla latte or a breakfast taco.
