Presidential Influence on Cultural Institutions

President Donald Trump has made headlines by naming several notable figures as recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors. Among them are Sylvester Stallone, a star known for his role in the “Rocky” series, and country music legend George Strait. This move is part of Trump’s broader effort to reshape the Kennedy Center, a prestigious arts venue that has historically enjoyed support across political lines.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has taken a strong stance against what he refers to as “woke” viewpoints in cultural institutions. This includes launching an investigation into content at several Smithsonian museums. The president has also taken control of the Kennedy Center, appointing himself as its board chairman in February.

“We have completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution,” Trump stated during a press conference at the Kennedy Center. He emphasized that he had ended the “woke political programming” that had previously dominated the center.

Honorees and Their Contributions

In addition to Stallone and Strait, other honorees include disco icon Gloria Gaynor, rock band KISS, and British actor Michael Crawford, famous for his role in “Phantom of the Opera.” Trump announced that he would personally host the awards gala, which typically takes place in early December and is broadcast on CBS.

“I did not insist, but I think it will be quite successful,” Trump remarked. He also humorously noted that he would like to receive an honor himself but admitted he had “never been able to get one.”

Sylvester Stallone, who is 79 years old, has been recognized for his work in the “Rocky” films, including nominations for best actor and screenplay. He is also a vocal supporter of Trump and serves as one of the president’s “Hollywood ambassadors” alongside Jon Voight and Mel Gibson. At a post-election event in November 2024, Stallone praised Trump as “the second George Washington.”

George Strait, at 73, is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with over 120 million records sold. His hits include “All My Exes Live in Texas” and “Amarillo by Morning.” Trump quipped about Strait, saying, “He’s a good-looking guy. Hope he still looks like that.”

Gloria Gaynor, 81, is celebrated for her iconic disco hit “I Will Survive.” KISS, formed in the 1970s in New York City, gained fame for their shock rock performances and distinctive face paint. Trump praised the band, stating, “They work hard, and they’re still working hard.”

Michael Crawford, 83, is renowned for his role in “Phantom of the Opera,” where he captivated audiences with his powerful tenor voice. Trump called him “one of the greatest talents I’ve ever actually seen.”

Controversies and Pushback

Trump’s leadership at the Kennedy Center has faced significant pushback. Many artists associated with the center, such as opera singer Renee Fleming and musician Ben Folds, have distanced themselves from the institution since Trump took control. Others, including comedian Issa Rae, have canceled performances.

The producers of the popular musical “Hamilton” decided to cancel a scheduled 2026 run, citing the loss of “neutrality” at the center. Trump defended his actions, claiming he was restoring the Kennedy Center as a premier venue for performing arts.

“The Kennedy Center was being run down, money wasn’t being spent properly. They were building things they shouldn’t have built that nobody wanted instead of taking care of the great gem that it is,” he said.

The Smithsonian Institution, which manages a network of museums, has responded to a White House letter announcing an investigation into content aimed at removing “divisive or partisan narratives.” The targeted museums include the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Museum of the American Indian.
