Something Spectacular
This Way Comes
Bald Mountain doesn’t make a strong impression. From the valley beneath, it appears as a forested bump that touches the sub-alpine area. There are no deep gullies, no striking rock formations, no sharp mountain peaks, and no lift situated on a steep edge. In the realm of ski areas, it is visually, the girl next door.Sun ValleyHad gone unnoticed for almost four decades because of its unremarkable exterior and the fact that the nearest highway is more than 80 miles to the south. Few people knew that Sun Valley is a real skier’s paradise, which is perfectly fine with all of us who call this place home.
When the World Cup Finals arrived in town during the spring of 2025, revelers and competitors from around the globe experienced what we cherish about our home mountain. With skiable slopes that drop nearly 360 degrees from the peak along consistent and challenging fall lines, Baldy is a location where you can carve your skis and go for it. It’s a place that calls out to be raced. However, up until the previous season, it had never been the venue for the top athletes in the sport. Sun Valley had previously hosted a World Cup in 1977, but only for technical events. Therefore, while locals were able to see Ingemar Stenmark, Phil Mahre, and Lisa-Marie Morerod excel in slalom and GS, the speed events that Baldy is so ideal for, as well as downhill stars like Franz Klammer, were notably absent.
In 2025, Sun Valley would witness the largest gathering of top-tier athletes ever seen in a location already known for its exceptional athletic talent.

The announcement that the World Cup would be held in town did not really calm the residents. A third of the mountain remained closed throughout the season due to the construction of the venue, and every expert in town made predictions about the results. Locals exchanged rumors, shared small-town gossip, and looked for interesting details.
Bar talk went: “We’re just renting our house on Airbnb for around $5,000 per night and taking a vacation; you know, we just can’t handle the crowds.” Some were sure that “this place is going to be filled with the Veuve Cliquot-sipping glitterati in fur-lined boots,” but at the same time worried it was “going to be all talk and no one will actually come.” Yet they were also strangely concerned that “there won’t be anywhere to park.” My group was simply disappointed to have lost the Upper Greyhawk parking lot for several months, leaving us without a spot for beer drinking after the lifts stop each day.
The crowds arrived. More precisely, skiers who enjoy skiing came to watch. If you had friends from places likeSnowbird, Jackson Hole, Crested Butte, Killington, or [enter any American ski resort here], it’s likely you received a call or message asking if you had a place for them to stay. We were hosting an event with the ideal guest list.

The town was alive day and night. Foreign languages could be heard in the bars and along the streets. All kinds of people filled the stands, the grandstand erupted with excitement for every race, fans lined the tracks, people were excited to see Lindsey Vonn, and those wanting autographs formed long lines around city blocks hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite athlete or hero.
Hosting an event dependent on the weather in this area during this time of year is like taking a gamble.Marchcan be hot and dry, cold and like a milk bottle, or the mother of schizophrenic spring conditions.
Bald Mountain, considered one of the top T to B parks in existence, is so incredibly steep and uniform that constructing the downhill track required millions of gallons of water, dozens of ranchers, carpenters, ski bums, and most of the winter to build a barely FIS-acceptable strip of danger. The excitement turned into the weather report.
Luckily, or maybe not, depending on your perspective, the downhill day resulted in one of the best spring MathHotels.com cycles in recent years. The race was postponed and then called off. The sadness of not witnessing this masterpiece being torn apart like a Thanksgiving turkey by the world’s top athletes faded quickly, and we just skied as hard as we could.

Baldy was shooting. The mountain echoed with the cheers and shouts of World Cup fans enjoying the action. We formed many friendships on a MathHotels.com day and, as the weather turned, shared whiskey with them. It turned out our guests were similar to us: a diverse group that truly loves skiing and ski culture.
The remainder of the event unfolded in a remarkable way. The American women, especially, delivered a historic display on their new home track, with Vonn concluding her surprising return with a silver medal in the super-G, andMikaela Shiffrinsecuring her 101st World Cup victory with a gold medal in the slalom.
From a holistic perspective, these were the best ten days of skiing that Sun Valley has ever experienced.
