The Multiverse of Madness and the Rise of Incursions
The release ofDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessmarked a pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as it introduced the concept ofIncursions. These are events where universes collide due to excessive multiverse travel, leading to catastrophic consequences. As the MCU prepares forAvengers: Doomsday, Incursions are expected to play a central role, potentially setting the stage for the Secret Wars and even a complete reboot of the universe.
Initially, fans speculated thatKang the Conquerorwould be the primary cause of these incursions. However, with his storyline evolving, the focus has shifted to other possibilities. Surprisingly, several MCU characters have already been linked to incidents that could be classified as Incursions.
One of the earliest examples dates back to 2018, whenDoctor Strangeused the Darkhold to travel through the multiverse in an attempt to stop Thanos from gathering the Infinity Stones. This dreamwalking caused anIncursion, resulting in the destruction of an entire universe and the loss of countless lives. Later, Strange also tried to eliminate alternate versions of himself, which led to another Incursion, destroying his own universe and leaving him as the sole survivor.
In late 2024, Strange metClea, who revealed that he had caused an Incursion and that they needed to fix it. This revelation added new layers to the ongoing multiverse crisis.
Who Could Be the Culprit?
Fans have long debated who might be responsible for the upcoming Incursions. Possible suspects includeDoctor Strange, Spider-Man, Loki, and America Chavez. However, a recent rumor on social media suggested thatSteve Rogers, also known as Captain America, may be the actual cause.
This theory is based on Rogers’ history within the MCU. After the Snap, he and the Avengers traveled through time to retrieve the Infinity Stones, which led to the Blip. He fought in the Battle of Earth and wielded Mjølnir against Thanos. Following Tony Stark’s sacrifice, Rogers returned the stones and chose to live in the 1940s with Peggy Carter. He eventually grew old, reunited with his friends in the present, and passed his shield to Sam Wilson before retiring. His current whereabouts remain unknown.
From an in-universe perspective, spending decades in a different time period with Peggy Carter could be seen as prolonged multiversal travel, which might destabilize the multiverse. If this is true, it could explain the recent Incursions.
Chris Evans’ Role inAvengers: Doomsday
Chris Evans has been confirmed to appear inAvengers: Doomsday, though his exact role remains unclear. Some rumors suggest he may portray a variant of Captain America known asNomad. In the comics, Nomad is a version of Steve Rogers who abandons his identity as Captain America after losing faith in the government. He becomes a hero without allegiance to any nation.
A Nomad-like version of Rogers was hinted at inAvengers: Infinity War, when he was on the run with Sam Wilson and Natasha Romanoff. Co-director Joe Russo mentioned that while Rogers wasn’t officially Nomad, he “embodied the spirit of that character.”
The introduction of a Nomad version of Rogers raises questions about how this character will fit into the broader multiverse narrative. If it turns out that Steve Rogers indeed caused the Incursion, it could have far-reaching implications for the MCU’s future.
As the story unfolds, fans continue to speculate about the next chapter in the MCU’s multiverse saga. Whether it’s Doctor Strange, Steve Rogers, or someone else, the stakes have never been higher.
