The Rise of Luxury Travel Among Younger Generations
Luxury travel is gaining traction among millennials and Gen Z, even as airlines focus on improving economy class seating. Despite these efforts, there remains a strong demand for high-end travel experiences. In May 2014, Etihad Airways introduced a groundbreaking luxury offering known as “The Residence.” This private suite, featuring a sitting area, bedroom, and a shower, was positioned as a step above first class. Initially available only on their A380 planes traveling between Abu Dhabi, London, New York, and Paris, The Residence has since expanded to other routes. Over a decade after its launch, it continues to be a symbol of luxury in commercial aviation.
Inside The Residence: A Private Oasis
The suite is divided into three rooms connected by sliding doors, ensuring privacy. Upon entering, passengers are greeted by the living room, which includes a sofa made up of two recliner seats and three ottomans with storage compartments and a hidden minibar. The space also features a 36-inch TV, along with two large dining trays that unfold from compartments on either side of the sofa. Controls for the seats and the TV are conveniently located within reach.
To the right of the entrance lies a narrow corridor leading to the bathroom and bedroom. These areas are among the main attractions of The Residence. Passengers can enjoy a private shower and a stationary bed, ideal for long-haul flights. The bedroom includes another TV and a queen-sized bed that can accommodate two adults. However, the standout feature is the private shower, complete with amenities like toiletries and bathrobes. Unlike other premium seats, The Residence offers a dedicated toilet and shower, providing an unmatched level of comfort.
How to Book The Residence
When The Residence was first launched, tickets averaged around $25,000 one-way, including services such as a concierge, butler, and private chef. While those services are no longer included, travelers still receive access to a private lounge at the airport, complete with a shower and amenities. They also get dedicated ground staff, priority boarding, and a flight attendant assigned solely to their suite. If a flight includes a layover lasting several hours, passengers are entitled to a hotel room and a pickup before takeoff.
Booking The Residence now requires an upgrade to a first-class ticket. This process differs from typical upgrades, as it must be arranged before the trip. First, travelers need to book Etihad’s first-class Apartment seat on the A380 for $6,000 or more, followed by a fee of $2,000 to $3,000 to upgrade to The Residence. If two people are traveling together, both must book first-class seats. Although this price is significantly lower than the original $25,000, the minimum cost still ranges from $14,000 to $15,000.
Cost-Effective Booking Tips
One of the most effective ways to book The Residence without overspending is through airline reward points. Etihad’s loyalty program, Etihad Guest, allows members to redeem accumulated points for this exclusive experience. Additionally, travelers can check if their credit card offers point transfers to Etihad Guest. Some of the world’s top airline points programs have partnerships with Etihad, making it easier to gather points for a luxurious flight.
