MARINA – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County states that “roundabouts will arrive soon” as construction progresses on the Imjin Parkway Expansion and Roundabout Project in Marina.

On August 22, Imjin Parkway and all roundabouts will operate in a single-lane setup, as reported by TAMC. This will provide room for the remaining construction work while helping people get used to navigating the roundabouts before transitioning to the final two-lane configuration. Information, including a video tutorial, on how to drive through roundabouts is available on its website athttps://www.imjinparkway.com/why-roundabouts/#traffic.

The Imjin Parkway initiative spans 1.7 miles of the roadway between Reservation Road and Imjin Road, involving the building of four roundabouts and expanding the road to four lanes. The project is anticipated to be completed by June 2026.

However, until that point, work on the project remains ongoing, including scheduled night shifts.

To prevent overlapping with Classic Car Week, the 10-day event scheduled from August 7 to 17, TAMC has shifted its nighttime operations to August 21. During this night shift, work will involve marking the entire length of Imjin Parkway and moving concrete barrier rails and delineators to guide traffic into single-lane roundabouts at every intersection. On August 22, Imjin Parkway and all roundabouts will be open in a single-lane setup.

From now until August 8, the day shift will finish grading subgrade material from Abrams Drive on the south side of Imjin Parkway to Reservation Road, along with other tasks. Paving is planned for the week of August 4.

Upcoming is the coordination of work by Pacific Gas and Electric Company at Abrams Drive on the south side of Imjin Parkway. PG&E intends to move certain equipment that interferes with the project’s construction at Abrams Drive on the southside, as part of some upgrades to the PG&E system in this area. This work is currently affecting TAMC’s timeline for finishing Abrams Drive.

The Christina Williams Memorial can only be accessed with an escort. Please contact Conner Schivo, Monterey Peninsula Engineering, at (831) 277-0137, or conner@MPE2000, or the city of Marina, [email protected], to obtain entry.

The legal speed limit in the construction area is 25 miles per hour, while the suggested speed when passing through roundabouts during construction is 15 mph.

The Imjin Parkway Expansion and Roundabout Initiative is a two-year project aimed at broadening the road and enhancing safety for approximately 30,000 drivers each day traveling between the Salinas region and the Monterey Peninsula.

The Imjin Parkway initiative entered its second phase in early March, with traffic now utilizing the newly built northern portion of the parkway while efforts concentrate on the southern section.

After the completion of phase two, phase three will involve various road construction tasks, such as removing temporary pavement, laying permanent road surfaces and temporary markings, installing drainage systems and lighting, and performing earthwork.

Phase four will involve the final asphalt layer — surface leveling — and marking.

After finishing, the Imjin Parkway Expansion and Roundabout Project will include on-street protected bike lanes, stormwater management zones, retaining structures, and a noise barrier.

The upgrades are designed to assist travelers passing through the corridor, as well as residents living along Imjin Parkway near Cal State Monterey Bay and the nearby neighborhoods in Marina Heights, Sea Haven, and Preston Park.

Marina city serves as the primary organization overseeing the project, which is also the second regional TAMC Measure X initiative to be constructed. Measure X was a ballot measure passed in November 2016 by 67.7% of voters in Monterey County, aimed at supporting the Transportation Agency’s Transportation Safety and Investment Plan.

The $40.5 million funding for the Imjin Parkway Expansion and Roundabout Project comes from several sources, including $2 million from Marina, which was collected through development impact fees, approximately $18.2 million from Monterey County’s Transportation Agency via Measure X, and roughly $20.2 million from California’s SB1 local partnership initiative.
