Created by damming Shirttail Creek as part of California’s Central Valley Project, this roughly 165-acre lake is surrounded by tree-covered hills and picturesque alpine forests. It offers a mini version of Lake Tahoe, but without the crowds that often accompany the more famous lake. The reservoir is part of the Foresthill Divide Road section of the Tahoe National Forest, an underrated area filled with dense forests, historic sites, rugged canyons, pristine rivers, and nearly 200 named mountains. This trail is a flat, easy 4.1-mile loop that begins and ends near the lake’s parking area. With minimal elevation gain and no challenging sections, most hikers can complete the trail in under two hours (not including time spent enjoying the views).
The reservoir also features a handicap-accessible picnic area where visitors can relax and take in the breathtaking surroundings without the need for long treks. For those looking for more excitement, the Sugar Pine Staging Area serves as a great starting point for OHV and ATV adventures through the surrounding woods.
Water-Based Recreation and More
Sugar Pine Reservoir is also a fantastic spot for water-based activities. The lake has a convenient boat ramp equipped with a floating dock and tie-ups, making it easy to enjoy a day on the water. Whether you’re zipping around in a motorized boat or paddling in a kayak, there’s something for everyone. Additionally, the lake has a great swimming area and is frequently used as a freshwater scuba diving site.
There are four main recreation areas and three campsites at Sugar Pine Reservoir: the Shirttail Campground, the Forbes Group Campground, and the Giant Gap Campground. If you want to extend your adventure, just 17 miles away is the quaint and beautiful California Gold Rush town of Foresthill. There, you can find additional accommodations and plenty of outdoor adventures.
