A New Night Market Brings Community and Culture to San Francisco’s Sunset District

The vibrant streets of San Francisco’s Sunset District have come alive with the launch of a new event called “Sunset After Dark.” This grassroots initiative, which kicked off on Friday, aims to celebrate the unique culture and diversity of the neighborhood. Unlike its predecessor, which stretched across seven blocks along Irving Street and drew crowds of up to 20,000 people, the new market is more compact but no less exciting. Organizers describe it as a community-run event that highlights local talent and fosters connections among residents.

At Smokin D’s, a popular food spot on Irving Street, owner Daniel Ramirez is preparing for the event. Smokin D’s is one of the co-organizers of the new night market, and Ramirez is enthusiastic about what the event represents.

“We’re really looking forward to getting everyone to celebrate the diversity of Irving Street,” said Ramirez. “It’s a chance for people to come together and enjoy the flavors and stories of our community.”

Focused on Inclusivity and Support

This year’s event has a different focus compared to previous versions. While the original Sunset Night Market was canceled in 2025 due to delayed payments from the city, the new version is designed to support AAPI businesses, Black-owned businesses, and minority-owned enterprises. Co-organizer Dear Community emphasizes the importance of this shift.

“We’re really excited to be a part of this community. Uplifting the community and celebrating together is at the heart of what we do,” said Rob Aiavao, a board member of Dear Community. “We knew there was a gap that needed to be filled, so we wanted to step in and help with that.”

One of the key differences this time around is the timing of street closures. Previously, streets were closed as early as 8 a.m., which affected local businesses and deliveries. This year, closures start at 3 p.m. on Fridays, giving organizers less time to set up but allowing for more flexibility in planning.

A Community-Led Effort

The cancellation of the original Sunset Night Market in 2025 sparked frustration among local business owners and residents. Supervisor Joel Engardio recalls the disappointment and the need for a solution.

“I was upset as well. That’s what spurred me into action by organizing an effort to bring it back on a smaller scale,” said Ramirez. “Community members and nonprofit groups stepped in, securing sponsorship from the Civic Joy Fund and private donations to launch a smaller, more manageable event.”

Engardio supports the new initiative, noting that it reflects the growing trend of community-led events across the city.

“I’m so excited to see this community-led event happening on Irving Street in the Sunset. A couple of years ago, we proved it was possible—the night markets—and now, they’re all over the city. It’s a wonderful thing, and I’m glad the tradition is continuing,” said Engardio.

Positive Impact on Local Businesses

Local business owners are also optimistic about the new event. Jet Seeto of The Mochi Donut Shop says he would like to see the market held every month if possible.

“I like to do it every month if we can because it brings people out and helps raise awareness about Irving Street,” said Seeto.

Hakim Husien of Sunrise Deli agrees, noting that while the large crowds last time were overwhelming, the new format is better suited for his business.

“Now we’re ready for it. We know what to do,” said Husien. “It really is a positive thing for the community. It brings everyone out.”

What to Expect at Sunset After Dark

The event will feature live performances, DJs, dozens of vendors, and a rib-eating contest. Proceeds from a carnival fundraiser at the market will benefit Lawton School’s PTA.

As the community comes together to celebrate, it’s clear that “Sunset After Dark” is more than just a night market—it’s a reflection of the resilience, creativity, and unity of the Sunset District.
