A Historic Setting for a New Jazz Experience
Nestled in the heart of downtown Rochester, a stately Georgian Revival building that dates back to 1929 has found new life with the opening of Vanni’s Jazz Lounge. This stylish cocktail bar, located on the lower level of the Inn on Broadway, offers an immersive experience that reflects the elegance and mystery of its era. The space was once home to The University Club of Rochester, a fraternal organization that eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1999. The building was later transformed into a boutique hotel, which opened its doors in 2000. Recognized as a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places, the structure is now under the ownership of the LiDestri family, who also operate LiDestri Foods in Fairport.
A Speakeasy-Inspired Escape
Vanni’s Jazz Lounge is named after Giovanni LiDestri and is pronounced “VAH-nees.” The bar is designed to evoke the ambiance of old-world speakeasies, hidden behind a bookcase that serves as an entrance. Guests must pull on the correct book to unlock the door, adding a touch of intrigue to the experience. Once inside, visitors are greeted by a cozy, intimate space with soft lighting that can accommodate up to 50 people. The lounge is set to become a hub for live music, featuring jazz performances from Thursday through Saturday evenings. A stage in one corner will host performers, while a VIP area adjacent to the stage offers seating for 10 to 12 guests. While the focus is on jazz, other musical genres may also be featured.
A Menu Inspired by Literature and Innovation
The cocktail menu at Vanni’s Jazz Lounge draws inspiration from classic drinks, reimagined with creative twists. For example, the first edition is a modern take on an Old Fashioned, crafted with chocolate milk-clarified bourbon and served with a house-made chocolate truffle. Another standout is Petals & Proof, a margarita infused with lavender and coconut flavors. The food menu offers light fare such as bruschetta, charcuterie, and truffle fries, perfect for pairing with a drink or enjoying as a snack.
Renovations Enhance the Overall Experience
In addition to the new lounge, the Inn on Broadway has undergone several renovations to enhance its offerings. The steakhouse-style restaurant, Tournedos, has been rebranded as Gio’s Prime 26, named after Giovanni LiDestri. The space has received a fresh coat of paint and new flooring, with walls adorned by vibrant artwork from the late local artist Ramon Santiago, whose pieces were part of LiDestri’s personal collection. The menu has been updated to include long-time favorites alongside new budget-friendly options, such as a burger topped with pork belly, Cheddar cheese, and onion jam.
A Vision for the Future
Laura Eldridge, the general manager of the Inn on Broadway, shared her vision for the future: “We’re working on revamping the experience and giving new life to an old staple in the city of Rochester. We’re aiming for more approachable fine dining.” This sentiment reflects the overall goal of creating a welcoming and refined atmosphere that honors the building’s rich history while offering modern comforts.

The Inn on Broadway is located at 26 Broadway. During restaurant and lounge hours, valet parking is available, with additional street parking options nearby. Vanni’s Jazz Lounge operates from 4 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, while Gio’s Prime 26 is open for dinner daily. The building is equipped with accessibility features, including a wheelchair lift for entry and an elevator leading to the lower level where Vanni’s Jazz Lounge is situated.
