Another great option is Lewis Campground, located on the north shore of the reservoir. It has 40 sites that cost about $20 per night, along with restrooms, grills, and access to drinkable water. This campground is also close to the Granite Chief Wilderness, which offers some of the best hiking trails in the area. Boating and swimming are allowed near both campgrounds, adding to the appeal of this picturesque location.
To reach French Meadows Reservoir, travelers can start from Foresthill, California, which is approximately an hour and 15 minutes away by car. The Forest Service recommends filling up the gas tank before entering the park, as there are no services available once inside. For those planning a visit, Worton’s Market in Foresthill is a convenient place to stock up on supplies. There are also a few lodging options in town, including cozy, rustic cabins at Miner’s Camp.
The closest major airport to the area is in Sacramento, about an hour’s drive away. Known as America’s farm-to-fork capital, Sacramento offers a unique blend of urban culture and natural beauty. For those who prefer to sleep under the stars, Morro Bay State Park is another excellent choice, having been voted California’s best state park for camping. Another top option is Saddlebag Lake Campground, located just outside Yosemite and considered one of the highest drive-to campgrounds in California.
