A New Era for Dollywood: Introducing NightFlight Expedition
Dollywood, the beloved theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is set to welcome its most ambitious attraction yet—NightFlight Expedition. From the outside, the ride appears as a massive green structure that resembles an airplane hangar. While still under construction, it’s already making waves as the largest single investment in Dollywood’s history, with a price tag of over $50 million. This figure surpasses even the cost of the DreamMore Resort and marks a significant milestone for the park.
NightFlight Expedition will be the longest ride at Dollywood and one of the largest in the industry, spanning 44,000 square feet—equivalent to four football fields. The ride itself will last approximately 5.5 minutes, offering guests an immersive experience of the Smoky Mountains at night. According to Dollywood President Eugene Naughton, this new attraction is not just about thrill but also about creating a unique family experience.
A First-of-Its-Kind Experience
NightFlight Expedition is set to redefine what an indoor coaster can be. It’s a first-of-its-kind indoor family coaster that combines water elements, multimedia, and immersive storytelling. Christian von Elverfeldt, CEO of Mack Rides, the manufacturer of the attraction, explained that the ride allows riders to feel as though their boat is free-floating, without the need for a traditional channel.
The journey includes climbing, dropping, soaring, and plunging through various thrilling elements. Pete Owens, Dollywood’s marketing vice president, described the ride as full of surprises that will leave guests amazed. One of the highlights is the “rip-roaring rapids,” where half a million gallons of water will rush by riders, simulating the experience of whitewater rafting. However, guests won’t have to worry about getting wet, as the indoor facility maintains a controlled environment.
Immersive Technology and Design
Naughton compared NightFlight Expedition to Disney’s Soarin’, calling it “Soarin’ on steroids” due to the advanced digital technology used. The ride features three-quarters coverage of digital visuals overhead, giving riders the sensation of flying through the Smokies. There are three specific rooms that guests will pass through, enhancing the immersive experience.
The ride’s rocking boat vehicles and conveyance system are similar to those used in a theme park in France. However, Dollywood’s version was custom-designed to fit the storyline and immersive experience of the attraction. According to Dollywood spokesperson Wes Ramey, this makes NightFlight Expedition truly unique, as no other installation does exactly what it does.
A Family-Focused Attraction
NightFlight Expedition is designed with families in mind, offering a respite from the weather with two indoor coasters at Dollywood. With a height requirement of 39 inches and a top speed of 29 miles per hour, the ride is accessible to a wide range of ages, including young children and older family members.
The attraction also includes a dedicated accessible loading area with a transfer track system, allowing for smoother access for guests using wheelchairs. This feature is the first of its kind at Dollywood, reflecting the park’s commitment to inclusivity.
Expanding Dollywood’s Reach
Dollywood has seen record-breaking attendance and continues to receive recognition for its guest experience, rides, food, and entertainment. NightFlight Expedition is part of a larger plan to grow the park and attract visitors from around the world. Naughton expressed a desire to take Dollywood’s unique offerings to Orlando, highlighting the park’s potential as a top family destination.
Dollywood has also partnered with Allegiant Air for special Dolly-themed flights from Orlando to Knoxville in November. These efforts reflect the park’s ambition to expand its reach beyond the Smoky Mountains.
Preparing for Spring Opening
Construction of NightFlight Expedition is underway seven days a week, with two shifts each day. The ride is expected to open in the spring, with Dollywood welcoming all guests on March 13. As the park continues to innovate and grow, NightFlight Expedition stands as a testament to Dollywood’s vision of providing unforgettable experiences for families.
