Indian Pass Raw Bar is a place where generations of families have gathered to enjoy the local oysters and the laid-back atmosphere. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a cherished part of the community and a symbol of the quiet charm of Florida’s Forgotten Coast.
A Hidden Gem on the Forgotten Coast
Nestled in a quiet corner of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Indian Pass Raw Bar is surrounded by two bays—Saint Joseph Bay and Apalachicola Bar—and is just steps away from the Gulf itself. This unique location gives it access to some of the freshest seafood and oysters available. For many, including myself, it has become a nostalgic destination that brings back memories of childhood trips filled with scalloping, shopping, and, most importantly, dinner at this iconic spot.

A Legacy Spanning Over 120 Years
The history of Indian Pass Raw Bar dates back to 1903 when it was established as a commissary and community store by the McNeill family, who were involved in the turpentine business. Over the decades, it transformed into a trading post, an oyster wholesale business, and eventually became a dedicated seafood joint by the 1980s. The McNeill family still owns and operates the establishment today.
Despite facing challenges such as devastating hurricanes like Hurricane Kate in 1985 and Hurricane Michael in 2018, the restaurant has always found support from the local community and loyal customers. Each time, it has bounced back stronger, maintaining its status as a beloved local institution.

What Makes It So Beloved
Operates on an Honor System
One of the most distinctive features of Indian Pass Raw Bar is its honor system. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a wall of coolers where they can select their desired oysters and other seafood. They then mark their choices on an order card, which they submit along with their payment. The same principle applies to the souvenirs and t-shirts displayed on the walls.
Each table is equipped with saltine crackers and a bottle of cocktail sauce for the raw oysters, and many visitors take advantage of the pre-dinner snack of sauce-on-crackers. This old-fashioned approach fosters a sense of trust and goodwill between the restaurant and its patrons, making it a special experience.
The Freshest Oysters Available
Thanks to its prime location near the bays and the Gulf, Indian Pass Raw Bar is able to offer the freshest oysters available. The restaurant even playfully claims, “our oysters slept in the bay last night!” This commitment to freshness makes it a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy the best of the region’s seafood.
Nothing Fancy, Just Pure Relaxation
Indian Pass Raw Bar embodies the laid-back spirit of the Forgotten Coast. There’s no need for fancy attire or formal dining—just a casual, no-frills environment where you can roll off the beach and grab a cold beer and fresh oysters straight from the cooler. The food is served on classic cafeteria-style trays, and paper towels are provided at each table.
It’s the kind of place where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
