Ranking Kentucky’s Non-Conference Road Trips as Destinations

The Ultimate Guide to Kentucky Basketball Travel Destinations

For many, family reunions are a time to reconnect with relatives. Some might gather in a park, while others prefer the more upscale setting of a hotel conference center. However, for me, the closest thing to a family reunion is my annual gathering with friends from all over the country, centered around Kentucky basketball games. We may not be related by blood, but we share a common love for the game and the memories it creates.

Traveling to new cities for these games is an adventure in itself. Exploring unfamiliar places, trying local cuisine, or even revisiting a favorite spot can make the experience unforgettable. When combined with the excitement of a high-profile Kentucky basketball game, the potential for epic memories is huge.

This year, Kentucky has four non-conference away games, and as travel planning season kicks into high gear, I’ve compiled a definitive ranking of all four destinations based on city, opponent, and overall atmosphere.

4. Louisville in Louisville

Louisville, Kentucky’s little brother, hosts this year’s game. While no one really wants to visit his place, it’s technically his turn in the rotation, and he insists he won’t burn the steaks this time. The Cardinals, under Pat Kelsey, are trying to regain relevance, and their growing preseason buzz could lead to more obnoxious fans.

There’s something special about painting the Yum! Center blue, but the rivalry hasn’t had the same energy since the Cal-Pitino era ended. Still, beating Louisville on their home court is always a thrill. The game will be intense, and while Louisville is a fine city, if you’re out of state, consider saving your travel budget for one of the other three games on this list.

3. Michigan State in New York

New York is back on the map for Kentucky this year, hosting the Champions Classic against Michigan State. Last season, the ‘Cats struggled in the Big Apple, losing to Ohio State. Mark Pope called that loss one of the worst of the season, and he’s determined for revenge.

The game will take place at Madison Square Garden, a venue Pope considers the second-best arena in the world. New York offers plenty of activities, even on a mid-week game day. From the Statue of Liberty to Ground Zero, there’s much to see and do. You might even pull a stunt like Andrew Carr and get engaged during your trip.

However, getting to New York on a Tuesday requires some dedication, and the Spartans aren’t as compelling as some other teams on this list.

2. Gonzaga in Nashville

Last year’s game against Gonzaga in Seattle was a memorable one, featuring an incredible comeback led by Jaxson Robinson. This year, the matchup moves to Nashville, a city that Kentucky fans are familiar with during the SEC Tournament.

The game takes place on a Friday, giving fans the rest of the weekend to explore Nashville and celebrate a victory. Plus, the game falls on my birthday, so I’ll be cheering from Tootsie’s.

1. St. John’s in Atlanta

This ranking is clear this year, with no room for debate. Atlanta is the top destination for Kentucky’s non-conference away games. Two top-10 teams, a player versus former coach dynamic, and the return of Rick Pitino on the opposing sideline make this game a must-see.

BBN took over Atlanta last year when the team pulled off an incredible win against Duke, marking Mark Pope’s first signature victory as head coach. This year, with St. John’s replacing UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic, the stakes are higher than ever.

Bryce Hopkins, a former Wildcat, will be suiting up for St. John’s in his second matchup against Kentucky. While the ‘Cats have beaten Pitino multiple times, this game promises to be different. It will be a weekend filled with Southern food, heartfelt basketball, and unforgettable moments right before Christmas.
