Raleigh Rises in National Nightlife Rankings

Raleigh’s nightlife is experiencing a surge in popularity, drawing both locals and visitors to its vibrant streets. On Thursday night, the city’s patios were packed with people enjoying the warm weather and the lively atmosphere. The city’s growing reputation as a top destination for entertainment has been highlighted by a recent study from Gambulls, a crypto gaming company that evaluated cities based on factors like bar density, closing times, average drink costs, music options, and safety. Raleigh was ranked fifth in the country, a position that many residents found surprising.

Kevin Steiner, a local who has lived in various parts of the country, expressed his surprise at the ranking. “I wasn’t a big partier, but I know there are cities with bigger nightlife scenes than Raleigh,” he said. However, others have started to see the value in the city’s more relaxed approach. Kyree, who recently moved to Raleigh, noted that it’s slower compared to other cities he’s visited. “If you’re looking for something laid-back, this is a good place to check out,” he said.

Despite being a smaller city in the South, Raleigh is proving to be a hub for entertainment. Chris Powers, co-owner of The Bend Bar on Morgan Street, says the city offers a variety of spots where people can enjoy an evening out. He mentioned that customers often arrive early, with some coming in waves throughout the night. “People come in right when we open at 4 p.m. They might stop by for a beer, have dinner, and then come back out,” he explained.

In the Glenwood South Entertainment District, places like My Way Tavern are seeing increased crowds. Manager Katherine Petrea said the city’s growth has contributed to a rise in business. “More people are moving into the city, so our business has definitely increased,” she said. She also pointed out that the city’s walkability is a major draw. “People can walk here, take an Uber, or just sit on the patio and have a drink. With the college town vibe, it’s really diverse.”

The study used a “Fun Score” ranging from 1 to 99 to rank cities, with higher scores indicating stronger nightlife. New Orleans topped the list with a perfect score of 99, followed by Pittsburgh at 75 and Las Vegas at 71. Columbus and Raleigh tied with scores of 63. Megan Reynolds, who was out with friends, said she loves Raleigh’s nightlife. “I have the most fun here out of anywhere I’ve ever been,” she said. Katelin Crowe added that the city feels like a community where she always runs into someone she knows.

Lexi Owens noted that Raleigh’s range of options sets it apart from larger cities like Miami or New York. “You can do something relaxing or something a bit more clubby,” she said. Safety also played a key role in the city’s strong ranking. The study highlighted that Raleigh has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, making it a safer place to enjoy a night out. The Raleigh Police Department has increased patrols in the Glenwood South area, and a new noise ordinance took effect in the entertainment district earlier this year.

Overall, Raleigh is showing that it’s more than just a small Southern city—it’s a destination with a thriving nightlife that continues to grow. Whether you’re looking for a quiet drink on a patio or a lively evening in a bar, the city offers something for everyone.
