News We’re Reading

  1. Oak Park PD share 2025 field stop data, Black people over 70% of stops
Oak Park residents are learning that roughly 74% of people stopped by local police in 2025 were Black, even though Black residents make up about 18% of the village. Police Chief Shatonya Johnson presented detailed field stop data to the village board, sparking debate over racial disparities, how transparently the information is shared, and whether reports should be made more accessible to the public.

  2. Construction starts on Longfellow Park, including new pickle ball courts
Construction is underway at Oak Park’s Longfellow Park, bringing four dedicated pickleball courts, an expanded splash pad, a sensory garden, and a new playground by this fall. Funded in part by a state OSLAD grant, the project will also donate old playground equipment to a global nonprofit while upgrading a key neighborhood gathering spot.

  3. 28 Illinois schools receive state Blue Ribbon Schools award
Two Oak Park Catholic schools, Ascension and St. Giles, have been named among 28 Illinois Governor’s Blue Ribbon Schools, recognizing strong academic performance statewide. The new state program replaces the discontinued national Blue Ribbon award and will be managed by Illinois officials going forward, keeping similar rigorous standards for honoring top-performing schools.

  4. Cook County prosecutors dismiss 21 cases against ICE protesters, including suburban moms arrested in sit-in
Moms from Oak Park and neighboring River Forest who joined a sit-in outside the ICE processing center in Broadview just had their misdemeanor protest charges dismissed by Cook County prosecutors. The decision, affecting 21 cases, reflects a policy that weighs First Amendment rights and lack of violence when handling protest-related arrests.
