Glen Cove Weekly Update: Fire, Veterans, and Community Celebrations
Glen Cove is buzzing with activity this week, from a recent house fire to exciting community events and honors for local leaders. Here’s what’s happening in the town this week.
Local News Highlights
House Fire Displaces Resident on Beverly Road
A significant house fire occurred at 5 Beverly Road in Glen Cove on February 25, displacing one resident and requiring over 60 volunteer firefighters from seven departments to respond. The Glen Cove mayor and deputy mayor were on-site, and Glen Cove EMS treated the occupant for smoke inhalation. The Nassau County Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
Veterans Now Eligible for Property Tax Exemption
Glen Cove City Council has unanimously approved a new real property tax exemption that fully waives city property taxes and certain city charges for qualifying severely disabled veterans’ primary residences. This measure, proposed by Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck, honors veterans’ service while clarifying that school district and county taxes remain unchanged.
Deborah Brisbane Honored for Decades of Youth Work
Deborah M. Brisbane, a longtime leader at the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club, is being honored this Women’s History Month for three decades of service to local youth. She will transition to board chair as Aimee Eberle becomes board president. The club will celebrate her 30-year legacy at its Legacy & Leadership Spring Event on April 18 at Piping Rock Club.
Congressional Members Vote on War Powers Act
Glen Cove’s Rep. Tom Suozzi joined fellow Democrat Laura Gillen in supporting a House measure to limit President Trump’s ability to launch further strikes on Iran without Congress. Although the War Powers resolution failed narrowly, it highlighted party-line divisions among Long Island’s four House members.
Democrats Hail Kristi Noem’s Ouster
Suozzi also played a role in pushing for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s removal, having signed impeachment articles and later opposing a DHS funding bill he said lacked needed reforms. He continues to advocate for changes to ICE tactics and protections for immigrant communities as President Trump nominates a new DHS chief.
