The government has appointed actor Park Bo-gum, the main star of Netflix’s popular series “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” as the honorary ambassador for Korean tourism. After being named, Park will work with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to promote the Korean tourism industry over the next year.

The revelation was shared via the culture ministry’s teaser video for the “Never Ending Korea” tourism initiative, which was posted on the ministry’s YouTube channel, Imagine Your Korea, on Thursday morning.

  • South Korea needs to position tourism as a key sector of importance

  • Seungkwan from Seventeen supports Jeju Island’s tourism and environmental preservation

  • Shortly after opening, North Korea restricts foreign tourism to a ‘world-class’ resort zone.

Park joins a series of the nation’s most popular celebrities in the entertainment field who have held the position of tourism ambassador. The boy group BTS assumed the role in 2022, followed by actor Lee Jung-jae from the acclaimed “Squid Game” (2021-) series in 2023 and the girl group NewJeans in 2024.

As the honorary ambassador for this year, Park will concentrate on highlighting the personal elements of Korean tourism to align with current trends in the travel sector. Recently, travelers have moved away from traditional tour packages and are looking for more private, customized experiences that match their unique preferences.

In the latest teaser video, Park encourages every traveler to “become the protagonist of the story” by personally discovering the endless attractions of Korean tourism. Two additional videos are scheduled for release on July 29, the day he will be formally named an honorary ambassador by the culture ministry. The content will include a short film and a music video.

Park performed the theme song “On My Way” by himself, as stated by the ministry. The track was created by Kenzie’s production team KZLab and will be accessible on streaming platforms beginning Thursday.

The government has also collaborated with Netflix to create promotional content by parodying the streaming company’s hit series to promote Korean tourism. A video featuring scenes from “Squid Game” was released on July 3, and another one inspired by “All of Us Are Dead” (2022), which recently announced the production of its second season on Wednesday, is set to launch on August 7.

Videos showcasing remote areas, including the Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions, have also been produced.

Audiences who watch K-content are twice as likely to travel to Korea, as stated by Netflix. The latest advertising initiative aims to encourage people to explore authentic experiences in Korea, extending beyond what is shown on screen.

New promotional videos have been created and will be shown in Times Square, New York, as well as in 15 other global cities such as Tokyo, Beijing, and Bangkok. Additionally, the government plans to focus on 20 key markets by collaborating with YouTube and Netflix.

Over 85 percent of the eight promotional videos were filmed outside of Korea,” stated an official from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. “We aimed to contribute to the development of tourism in rural regions by showcasing lesser-known attractions to international audiences.
