Discover Mystic from the Water with Adventure Mystic

If you’re looking for a fresh way to experience the charm of Mystic, Connecticut, consider exploring it from the water. Adventure Mystic offers kayak and paddleboard rentals on the Mystic River, providing a unique opportunity to see the area at your own pace.

Getting to Adventure Mystic

Adventure Mystic is conveniently located just outside of downtown Mystic on Holmes Street. Unlike the downtown area, which requires crossing the historic drawbridge that can cause heavy traffic, this location has its own parking lot. If the lot is full, there are often options for street parking nearby.

The best route to reach Adventure Mystic is via I-95. Take Exit 90 onto Route 27. While this road may have some traffic, it’s much less congested than crossing the Mystic River through downtown. The parking lot is situated behind the building, making it easy to access.

About Adventure Mystic

Adventure Mystic is more than just a rental service. They offer kayaks (both single and double), paddleboards, and bicycles during the summer months, as well as snowboard rentals in the winter. Their mission is to make outdoor adventures accessible to everyone. They also provide lessons for those new to kayaking and paddleboarding, making it easy for beginners to get started.

In addition to rentals and lessons, Adventure Mystic hosts private parties and events, as well as an adventure club for kids. There’s something for everyone here!

Don’t forget to stop by their store. It’s a charming shop that sells fun Mystic-themed apparel, stickers, and other memorabilia. You’ll also find outdoor gear such as paddleboards and accessories available for purchase or rental.

My Experience Kayaking on the River

During my visit, I spent an hour kayaking on the Mystic River. An Adventure Mystic staff member helped me launch into the water. I was provided with a wet bag and a waterproof pouch for my phone, which was a great convenience. A life vest was also given to me for safety while on the water.

The direction you choose to paddle depends on the tides. Adventure Mystic plans trips so that you go against the tide when heading out, allowing you to return with the tide. This makes the return trip easier, especially after a long session on the water.

As we started our journey, we headed toward the historic swing bridge, offering great views of the drawbridge. We were lucky enough to watch the drawbridge open while we were on the river!

We paddled under the drawbridge and past Mystic River Park. As we moved further along, we saw many boats on both sides of the river due to the marinas. Continuing past the Mystic River Railroad Bridge, we witnessed the swing bridge open, which was a memorable moment.

We paddled beyond the train bridge before turning back to explore the Mystic Seaport Museum from the water. I love the museum’s little lighthouse. We even passed by the Sabino, a historic wooden steamboat that serves as a working exhibit. The Sabino operates daily trips during the warmer months, offering visitors a chance to learn and enjoy the Mystic River.

Is Adventure Mystic Worth It?

Absolutely! It’s a fantastic way to explore Mystic from the water at your own pace. There’s flexibility in choosing how long you want to stay out—whether it’s a half day (four hours) or a full day (eight hours). If I were to do it again, I’d likely opt for a half day to explore further out and see places like Noank or Enders Island from the water.

If you’re interested in booking a rental, you can do so online. Adventure Mystic provides a convenient and enjoyable way to experience the beauty of Mystic from the water. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is a must-try activity that offers a unique perspective of the area.
