A Unique Experience at Naviva Resort

PUNTA MITA, MEXICO — Alvaro Mackissack walked along the sandy beach as the sun dipped below the horizon. He joined a small group of friends on a cozy gathering of soft couches facing a modest stage where waves gently lapped behind. Unlike typical concerts that require crowds in packed venues, Mackissack and his family enjoyed an intimate setting with only 20 others, all soaking in the ocean sunset and the performance of singer/songwriter Marc Scibilia.

The resort, which houses only 30 guests in 15 tented bungalows, is known for its focus on experiential tourism. The unplugged series offers a unique blend of music, nature, and personal connection, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for both artists and guests.

An Intimate Musical Setting

The unplugged concert series at Naviva is more than just a performance; it’s an immersive experience that brings together musicians and guests in a relaxed, natural environment. Instead of traditional shows filled with pressure to fill a venue, the resort focuses on creating a space where artists can be themselves and connect with their audience on a deeper level.

Naviva Resort Manager Eduardo Sampere described the experience as more than just a concert. “It’s the dinner, it’s being on property during the weekend with the artist. It’s for the artist to be able to experience the property with the other guests,” he said. The 45-minute performance is just a small part of what the unplugged weekend offers.

For musician Marc Scibilia, the Naviva experience was a refreshing change after three months on tour. “Their willingness to cater the night to my music and what I do was amazing,” he said. “The integrated experience between what they do and what I do offered a great way for me to recharge as I go into writing and recording a new album.”

A Special Beginning for the Unplugged Series

The idea for the unplugged series came from an unexpected moment when a high-profile musician stayed at the resort. While the artist’s name remains confidential, Sampere shared that the performer felt so comfortable at Naviva that he began playing guitar by the pool. A couple celebrating their anniversary happened to be there, and they were treated to an impromptu concert.

Sampere realized how important it was for artists to have moments of freedom away from the spotlight. “I also saw how amazing it was also for the other guests to have this interaction with someone that they felt they could never be able to interact with,” he added.

Mackissack and his family, visiting from Guadalajara, described the experience as “something unreal.” “Enjoying some incredible music, watching the sun go down, surrounded by people with whom I’d later have the most amazing dinner and without knowing make lifelong friendships was awesome,” he said.

Expanding the Unplugged Lineup

Naviva’s team reached out to musicians through social media and even made a trip to Nashville to spread the word. Kimberly Giblin, commercial director for Naviva, noted the natural connection between the resort and the city. “Both Naviva and Nashville share a passion for genuine hospitality and understand how music can build meaningful bonds between people.”

Shooter Jennings was the first to kick off the unplugged series in early May 2025. “The minute I got there, I’m like, this is too good to be true,” he said. He found it refreshing that none of the guests knew who he was. “It felt totally different than a normal gig. There was no pressure.”

Jennings described the experience as a return to the roots of music. “The idea is brilliant. I got to play my songs in front of some people who had no pre-judgment.”

Other artists scheduled for the Naviva Unplugged lineup include Lee Brice, Brittney Spencer, Moriah, Cassadee Pope, and Mat Kearney.

A Vision Rooted in Authenticity

Naviva was founded by John O’Sullivan, a regional vice president and general manager at Four Seasons. He spent seven years developing the concept, which emphasizes smallness, authenticity, and immersion in local communities. “I love the idea of creating those authentic connections,” he said. “The first time someone comes, they are a guest. The second time, they come back as a member of our community or tribe.”

The resort offers a unique experience with no reception desk, check-in or check-out, televisions, or menus. All drinking water is extracted from the air and bottled on-site, while coffee is roasted nearby. “To me, music is a natural extension of nature,” O’Sullivan said. “When you are at Naviva in the morning, you hear all the birds around you. That’s the first unplugged series we ever had.”

A Return to Music’s Roots

For artists, the opportunity to perform in a natural, unpressured setting is invaluable. “Think of when musicians were at their purest,” O’Sullivan said. “Was it U2 playing at The Sphere in Vegas? They were amazing there, but the purest U2 was when they were playing in the Baggott Inn in Dublin in 1972 and you could get in to see them for free.”

Jennings described his trip to Naviva as one of the best experiences of his life. “I was rejuvenated. I read like two books. We sat out in the sun for two days by our private pool and then went and did a show and had the best ribs we’ve ever had and just hung out.”
