BAKERSFIELD, California (KGET) — Keith David’s powerful voice has appeared in over 400 feature films, stage performances, TV series, and video game roles. The extensive acting career of this New York-born actor has included portraying both imaginary characters and roles inspired by real individuals.

In the Prime Video series, “The Gray House,” David takes on another role inspired by a real historical person. His new project involves playing prominent abolitionist and clergyman Henry H. Garnet in a story set during the time before the Civil War.

David approaches each acting opportunity with the same enthusiasm, yet he experiences a heightened sense of duty when taking on roles like the one in the streaming platform’s production. It involves combining real-life elements with narrative components.

I feel a duty to strive to respect the individuals I believe they symbolized,” David states. “They are historical because they had an impact on our history and the narrative of who we are.

As a group, we are all human beings. Now, that is also a process you experience with any character you portray. We have some information written about Henry, so you combine that with the character that has been developed within the framework of this story.

The reason David needs to play Garnet is because “The Gray House” explores the real-life story of the unrecognized women who played a crucial role in shifting the outcome of the American Civil War in favor of the Union. A Virginia socialite, her strong-willed mother, a former enslaved friend, and Richmond’s most notorious prostitute transform their Underground Railroad efforts into a bold and successful intelligence network. They endanger their lives and liberty to protect the country’s future and defend American democracy.

All eight episodes of “The Gray House” can now be accessed via the streaming platform.

Garnet was an American abolitionist, preacher, teacher, speaker, and diplomat who fled slavery in Maryland along with his family. During his childhood in New York City, he attended the African Free School. He later gained recognition for his powerful oratory, which he employed to encourage enslaved African Americans to seek their own freedom.

David approached his depiction of Garnet in the same manner as he did with all his previous characters. He gathered the information he had read and understood about Garnet to determine how he should represent him.

It’s as if you’re bringing someone into existence for the first time. He had a deep voice. He had intense passion. But those are details within a broad generalization,” David says. “Now, you need to make it specific to this moment. What is he trying to convey? What is he ultimately hoping to communicate?

Your only option is to wish that there’s a mutual understanding and something amazing occurs.

David entered the role with extensive knowledge about Garnet. Having played Frederick Douglass on multiple occasions, his research frequently involved details about Garnet.

David, with his strong interest in history, noticed that much of what he expresses during Garnet’s powerful speeches, delivered over 165 years ago, still holds relevance today. When questioned if Garnet’s speeches serve as a warning about history repeating itself when we’re not paying attention, David claims that history will repeat itself even when everyone is watching.

One of the main reasons David has landed numerous roles is due to his unique voice. He hasn’t only appeared on screen for an extended period, but David has also accumulated a wide array of voice acting credits that include “Krapopolis” and “Gargoyles.”

Once more, David emphasizes that although the field of voice acting differs from when he is on camera, the process isn’t all that different for him.

It’s a different medium with its own unique challenges, but it’s still acting. Even when I’m in the booth doing a voiceover, I still act using my entire body,” David explains. “The difference is that you can’t see me in the booth.

You might observe a portrayal, an depiction of a character, a cartoon, or something similar, but we’re still performing in the booth. I’m still seeking the authenticity of the moment. I’m still aiming to uncover the truth of the moment I’m experiencing.

The present reality that David is portraying involves him collaborating with a group of actors, including Emmy award-winning Mary-Louise Parker. Additionally featured in “The Gray House” are Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis, and Emmy-nominated Ben Vereen.

The mini-series includes original music by Lainey Wilson, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Killer Mike, Yolanda Adams, Jon Bon Jovi, and others.
