Understanding the Challenges of Air Travel During a Crisis
Jess, a traveler from the UK, shared her experience of being stranded in Sri Lanka after her flight with Qatar Airways was canceled. She and many others are facing significant difficulties due to the Gulf airspace shutdown caused by recent tensions. This situation has left thousands of passengers in limbo, unsure of when or how they will be able to return home.
Jess explained that she visited Colombo airport to speak with a Qatar Airways representative, who advised her to email them about her situation. However, the rescheduled flight could take weeks, leaving her with limited options. While reimbursement is an option, other flights are expensive and scarce. She spoke with other airlines, such as Sri Lankan Airlines, which offered a flight on 28 March, and Singapore Airlines, which couldn’t accommodate her until 21 March.
Despite the availability of some airlines like Etihad and Emirates, Jess found these options inaccessible. The question remains: what should she do?
The Impact of the Gulf Airspace Shutdown
Since Iran began targeting economic sites like airports, travelers have discovered that air passenger rights rules offer little protection when flying on non-UK/EU airlines from outside Europe. Airlines like Qatar Airways can simply say, “Sorry, but it’s not our fault,” and delay flights without much accountability.
This situation is not unique to Jess. Airlines facing widespread disruption often encourage passengers to cancel their trips, as this removes them from the equation and ends the contract. If you request a refund, you may only receive a few hundred pounds for the unused portion of your journey, not the full cost of getting home.
Options for Travelers in Similar Situations
Jess appears to have three main options, depending on her circumstances:
-
Get Home as Soon as Possible:If Jess needs to return quickly due to work or family reasons, she must invest time and money into finding alternative routes. For example, I once had to fly to Bangkok at great expense and then take a British Airways flight back to Gatwick, costing around £1,300. From Sri Lanka, many available flights go to India, which requires an Indian visa. This can be a bureaucratic nightmare, especially for UK passport holders. Going via China might be a better option since UK passport holders no longer need a visa for China.
-
Wait for Qatar Airways:If Jess is not in a hurry, waiting for a seat on Qatar Airways could be the least stressful option. However, this could take a couple of weeks, depending on further military developments.
-
Explore Alternative Routes:Airlines like Etihad have announced plans to resume some flights from Asia via Abu Dhabi to Europe. For immediate departure, this could cost around £4,000 one way in economy, which is extremely expensive. However, other airlines like Oman Air are increasing their flights from Asia via Muscat to London Heathrow. For those willing to wait a few more days, prices may decrease.
The Broader Implications for Air Travel
The current crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of international air travel, particularly for passengers on non-European carriers. As the situation stabilizes, Middle East airlines will face the challenge of regaining passenger trust. Some travelers may avoid the region due to its proximity to conflict zones, while others will remember how they were treated during the aviation shutdown. Rival carriers may benefit from this situation.
