Everything You Need to Know to Plan an Amazing Trip to Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, Florida
Henderson Beach State Park is a stunning destination located in Destin, Florida. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and diverse recreational opportunities, this park offers something for everyone. From swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico to exploring nature trails and enjoying wildlife, there’s no shortage of activities to keep visitors entertained.

The Beauty of Henderson Beach State Park
One of the most striking features of Henderson Beach State Park is the 30-foot tall snow-white sand dunes that lead up to the gorgeous, crystal-clear Gulf waters. These dunes are not only visually impressive but also play a crucial role in protecting the coastline from erosion. Visitors can take a walk along an elevated boardwalk that provides a unique view of the coastal dune ecosystem without disturbing it.

Swimming and Safety at the Beach
The highlight of Henderson Beach State Park is its beautiful beach and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. While the warm, turquoise green waters are perfect for swimming on most days, it’s essential to check the beach warning flags before entering the water. These flags indicate current conditions such as hazards, high surf, or the presence of stinging marine life. Red flags mean dangerous conditions, and even the strongest swimmers should avoid the water during these times.
Rip currents can be particularly dangerous, and many people have found themselves in life-threatening situations by ignoring the warnings. As a local, it’s important to emphasize the need for awareness and caution when swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Along the boardwalk, visitors can rinse off with outdoor showers, making it a convenient spot for those who want to freshen up after a swim.
Nature Trail Experience
For those interested in exploring the natural surroundings, there is a ¾-mile pet-friendly trail that winds through shifting sand dunes and coastal scrub. One of the unique aspects of this trail is that the sand dunes are constantly changing, so each visit may offer a slightly different experience. However, it’s important to avoid walking directly on the dunes, as this can cause them to erode and damage the fragile ecosystem.
The trail leads through both sand dunes and coastal scrub habitat, where visitors may spot native plants such as myrtle oaks, Choctawhatchee sand pines, and Sand live oaks. The natural features of the park are truly amazing and offer a glimpse into the diverse ecosystems found in the area.

Picnicking and Events
Henderson Beach State Park has six pavilions that are perfect for picnics. Each pavilion includes barbecue grills, picnic tables, and restroom facilities. These shelters provide a great break from the hot Florida sun and can be rented for weddings, special events, and reunions.
Wildlife and Bird Watching
Visitors to the park can enjoy spotting wading shorebirds and marine wildlife. Dolphins, sea turtles, and various fish species are often seen in the waters. Land animals such as rabbits, bobcats, and gopher tortoises may also be spotted by lucky visitors.
Camping at Henderson Beach State Park
The campground at Henderson Beach State Park currently offers 60 campsites that can accommodate tent camping and RVs. Each site includes water and electric hookups (30 and 50 amp service), picnic tables, fire rings with ground grills, and clothesline posts. The maximum RV length allowed is 60 feet, and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance.
The campground also features a dump station, heated and air-conditioned restrooms with showers, coin-operated washers and dryers, and vending machines. Pets are allowed in the campground, making it a great option for families traveling with their furry friends.
