Grocery Outlet Bargain Market Announces Store Closures Across the Mid-Atlantic

A major discount grocery chain with locations across the Mid-Atlantic is closing dozens of stores. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market announced the move in its latest earnings release on Wednesday, March 4. The closures come after the California company’s board approved an “optimization plan” aimed at increasing profits and performance.

Under the plan, 36 supermarkets will close, including 18 in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The decision was made to focus on underperforming stores and reshape the company’s new store growth strategy. The goal is to reallocate resources to strengthen operating results and returns on capital.

“We’re closing underperforming stores, reshaping our new store growth strategy, and reallocating resources to strengthen operating results and returns on capital,” said CEO and president Jason Potter in a statement. “We are confident that we have identified the core challenges, and now have the right plans in place and the right team to execute them.”

Local Communities React to Store Closures

Grocery Outlet stores in Gibbstown and Mays Landing said they’ll close on Saturday, March 21. Both locations shared heartfelt messages on social media expressing gratitude for the support from their communities.

“Serving this community has been both an honor and a privilege, and while this chapter is coming to a close, our commitment to community engagement and service will continue through other avenues,” the Mays Landing store posted on Facebook. “Thank you for believing in us and for the unwavering support you have shown throughout this journey.”

Gibbstown’s owners thanked the South Jersey community for its support. “We ask that you please keep our family in your prayers, and especially our employees, who worked hard and faithfully and now have to seek other employment,” they wrote on Facebook. “They have been an important part of this journey, and we are incredibly grateful for them. To those who did show up for us and supported us along the way — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We appreciate you more than words can express.”

Customers quickly shared their disappointment. “This breaks my heart to read,” a Mays Landing fan wrote. “While the prices and product selection are always top tier, what really sets this store above the rest is their amazing team. I feel like a part of the family every single time I come in. This store will be missed deeply!”

Some shoppers questioned if Grocery Outlet’s model is sustainable. “Blame the community all you want guys, but here’s your community in the comments mourning your store before it’s even closed,” one person replied to the Gibbstown store’s post. “Obviously people liked your store and while I stopped by for an occasional carton of eggs or box of butter, I couldn’t see myself doing my weekly shopping there. Grocery outlet simply doesn’t carry everything most families need for the week.”
