For many years, residents of Frisco, Texas, have shared the tale. They said land was acquired, and a park was promised. One day, construction crews would arrive at the 1,000-acre area, and the land would be transformed. Families would have picnics and kids would enjoy playing. But when exactly was this supposed to occur? No one could say. Maybe it was just a myth. The land was previously owned by Exide Technologies, an industrial facility that recycled batteries — leading to contamination of nearby soil and groundwater with lead. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2012, and the city has been working to restore the site ever since. However, that was all the information people had.
Then emerged the announcement: The Frisco City Council had approved a $35 million budget, hired a contractor, and set the construction timeline for 2026. Assuming everything proceeded smoothly, the first new section of Grand Park—”Phase 1″—was expected to open the subsequent year. As Mayor Jeff Cheney statedin a Facebook postIn 2022: “Grand Park is our most cherished urban myth in Frisco. However, this Fall you will finally have the opportunity to start exploring the park as we launch the first phase of trail systems throughout the park. More updates are coming soon!”
This is further positive news for Frisco, one ofThe two flourishing Dallas suburbs in Texas that made it to the top 10 safest places in America in 2025. Widely recognized as “Sports City USA,” Frisco features five stadiums, more than a dozen sports organizations, and highly regarded athletic training centers. Among other attractions,Frisco provides a unique lazy river baseball stadium experience. It’s only appropriate that the city of 251,000 should also take back a large new green area.

What will Grand Park resemble?
Naturally, the new Grand Park will include lawns, sports areas, and water elements. The pavilions will offer protection and places for people to gather, while picnic tables will be available for dining. However, the City of Frisco has big plans for community facilities: Grand Park is set to feature botanical gardens, a developed nature center, splash zones, a dog area, a sculpture park, and an open-air theater for performances. One architectural visualization shows a “wetland entrance” with kayakers floating around a pond that is expected to span 5 acres. The project is being led by Design Workshop, a firm located in Colorado.
To be fair, Grand Park is already in existence, featuring a trailhead located at 5001 Cotton Gin Road. The public is already allowed to explore the area during daylight hours (specifically from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset). If you’ve been excited about these designs, the park’s current appearance (as shown above) might disappoint you: A basic wooden sign greets visitors to the undeveloped land, and a 2.2-mile dirt path runs through the park. This trail is officially called the Big Bluestem Trail, and it was a significant event when it opened in 2022. For the first time, this former “potential Superfund site” became easily accessible for hikers, runners, and nature enthusiasts. Visitors can leave the main trail and take a loop around a wildflower meadow. It’s straightforward, but an important initial step.
The following stage will significantly enhance the area with courts and play equipment linked by a system of paved walkways (as shown below). The space will evolve from a peaceful spot for strolling into a center for leisure activities. Additionally, the site, situated approximately in the heart of Frisco, is ideally located.
When is the best time to visit Grand Park and how to make the most of it
These types of schedules are always uncertain, but the City of Fresno anticipates that the new facilities at Grand Park will open in the spring of 2027, after a full year of construction. Featuring flat terrain and a pentagonal design, Grand Park is a straightforward location to locate near several other interesting Frisco attractions: TheNational Video Game Museum and the TrainTopiahistoric railway museum is less than a mile away, and theFrisco Heritage Centeris just slightly further than that.
Numerous travelers will reach Frisco through Dallas, the Texan metropolitan area home to 1.3 million residents located just to the south. Frisco offers numerous attractions, even without the upcoming development of Grand Park; sports enthusiasts come here for a variety of activities ranging from football and soccer to Banana Ball. A significant outdoor destination is Lake Lewisville, a 29,000-acre lake situated west of the city, surrounded by parks.
Public transit is not highly developed in Frisco, meaning you will likely need to rent a vehicle to navigate the northern areas of Dallas.
