The Hidden Resting Spaces for Cabin Crew on Long-Haul Flights
A flight attendant recently shared an intriguing glimpse into the lesser-known resting areas used by cabin crew during long-haul flights, sparking widespread interest and admiration across social media platforms. Charlie Silver, a cabin crew member with TUI, provided a detailed look at these cozy sleeping quarters in a recent TikTok video posted under her account @silvercharlie.
In the video, captioned “Sleeping at 40,000ft in the sky,” Charlie revealed that cabin crew have access to specially designed bunk beds located above the main cabin. These hidden spaces, often referred to as crew rest compartments, serve as essential areas for rest during extended flights. They ensure that crew members remain alert and ready to perform their duties effectively.
These compartments are typically equipped with multiple bunks stacked vertically, allowing several crew members and pilots to take turns resting. While some of these areas are simple, others may include additional features such as privacy curtains, reading lights, storage space, in-flight entertainment systems, and even climate control.
In the clip, Charlie can be seen preparing for a nap. She starts by placing a freshly washed and ironed sheet on the mattress, followed by three small pillows. She then unfolds a blue fleece blanket, removes her neckerchief and hair tie, and settles under the covers before securing a seatbelt around her lower body.
The video quickly gained attention, with over 300 comments from viewers expressing their fascination. Many users suggested that such spaces should be available to passengers instead of just crew members. One comment read, “I’d pay good money to have one of these instead of a normal seat,” while another exclaimed, “This is so cool!!!”
Another user proposed, “Crew unable to sleep should do a sideline renting out to passengers. I’d love to lie down on a long haul flight,” and a fourth added, “This looks so cosy!” Some viewers were surprised by the existence of these compartments, with one asking, “Why have I travelled long haul millions of times with TUI and never knew about these?” Another questioned, “Been on a TUI 787 many times, where on earth is this located on the plane?!?!” to which Charlie responded that people often mistake the compartment for a toilet.
Tips for Surviving Economy Travel
In addition to sharing insights into crew rest areas, a former flight attendant has offered valuable advice for surviving economy travel. Marcus Daniels, 35, left the aviation industry in 2019 after five years of working on domestic and international flights. Although he no longer works as a cabin crew member, he still enjoys traveling and has developed effective strategies for long-haul flights.
His top tip for travelers: “Be very mindful of what you’re bringing onboard.” He emphasized that overpacking can lead to unnecessary stress for both the traveler and other passengers. “There’s nothing worse than being the last passenger onboard, opening up all the lockers and realizing there’s no space to put your bag,” he said.
Daniels recommends carrying only a small roller bag and a side bag that can fit under the seat in front of you. “That’s it. No pillow, no big jacket,” he added. By keeping luggage minimal, travelers can avoid the chaos and inconvenience that often accompany overpacking.
