I have experienced the economy class at the back of the bus, stretched my legs comfortably in premium economy, and savored the luxury of first class.
But following a recent business trip to the United States, I believe I’ve discovered my ideal balance.

Check-in, luggage, and the lounge area
Following a busy three-day stay in Los Angeles, I reluctantly departed my hotel for the airport to begin the stressful long-flight trip back home.
Always an early bird when it comes to airport arrivals, I went straight to the check-in counter at LAX — a chaotic place even on the best days.
I easily reached the front of the line for a smooth and effortless check-in, free from the stress of placing my heavily packed suitcase on the scale, thanks to the very generous 30kg baggage allowance in business class.
After a similarly efficient journey through security, I made my way to the Fiji Airways business class lounge to savor a glass of wine and a small snack before my late-night flight.
The lounge achieved an ideal equilibrium, offering a serene and cozy atmosphere while remaining surrounded by the lively energy of the Tom Bradley International terminal through its vibrant outdoor terrace.
A wide selection of drinks and food is available, along with numerous seating choices, each providing access to power outlets.
As it was time to board my flight, I quickly experienced the Fijian hospitality that the airline is famous for.
Families with kids are encouraged to board early – a smart strategy that lets children get comfortable without slowing down the check-in procedure.
The Cabin
After I reached the opulent, pink-lit cabin, I was welcomed by the attendant who led me to my assigned seat.
On extended flights, Fiji Airways uses the Airbus A350, offering a contemporary 1-2-1 layout in business class.
Each traveler has immediate access to the aisle – essential for extended overnight journeys – and every seat transforms into a complete flat bed, offering ample privacy and storage area.
The style is modern yet inviting, featuring Fijian-themed patterned cushions and linen elements that set it apart from more formal cabin designs.
Holding a glass of champagne and a bowl of nuts, coconut, and pineapple slices, I felt as if I was meant for a tropical getaway.
The food and bed
Approximately 45 minutes into the journey, a flight attendant guided me through the menu and dining choices, all of which had a Pacific theme.
Notable features were fresh starters, hearty main courses that combined global cuisine with traditional Fijian tastes, and a carefully curated wine selection offering options from Australia and New Zealand.
The meal was presented in an elegant manner, featuring finely arranged fine china, a wave-themed table lamp, and a handcrafted natural vau flower made by local Fijian women, highlighting Fiji’s natural beauty and artistry.
Other options include Fijiana Cacao chocolates, Distillery Co’s Blue Turtle Gin drinks, and Bati Rum from Pacific Beverages, all available only through the airline.
Regarding in-flight entertainment, every seat was equipped with a personal screen featuring popular movies from Disney and HBO.
Guests can also take advantage of wellness-related content such as guided meditation, breathing exercises, and music to use during the flight. Alternatively, they can watch live sports on certain flights or have free access to PressReader, which offers over 7,000 publications.
Nevertheless, sleep is the airline’s primary focus, as demonstrated by the outstanding turndown service provided during meal times.
When it’s time for a quick rest, a hostess carefully prepares the flat bed with a high-quality mattress topper, a comfortable duvet, and as many soft pillows as desired.
I fell asleep within the first 10 minutes of my movie and didn’t wake up until the next morning when I smelled breakfast, about an hour and a half before arriving in Nadi.
A lighter yet enjoyable breakfast was served before landing, once more highlighting Pacific-inspired tastes, such as a cozy pile of coconut and quinoa pancakes and a refreshing fruit smoothie – an experience I haven’t come across on any other flight.
The stopover
Getting to Nadi was simple and efficiently managed. Travelers going through transit are directed through security before entering the departure area for their next flight to Sydney. Meanwhile, most business class passengers take advantage of the small but pleasant lounge near the gate, where I believe I had one of the finest cappuccinos I’ve ever had.
For numerous travelers, this short pause offers an excellent opportunity to move around, rejuvenate, or buy some memorabilia prior to the last part of the journey to Australia.
Arriving to Sydney
The final part of the flight lasted four and a half hours, and although I wanted to use the in-flight entertainment, the flat-top mattress was calling, offering a bit more sleep and a refreshed arrival in Sydney.
I felt significantly more refreshed compared to earlier nonstop flights, and the split journey with the fully flatbed configuration made a noticeable impact on reducing jet lag — I didn’t experience any of it in the days that followed.
Although I never physically went to Fiji and witnessed the beauty of the islands firsthand, the flight provided me with the welcoming warmth and tasty food that are well-known for this famous vacation spot.
The price
One of the most unexpected discoveries was the worth.
In comparison to nonstop services between LAX and Sydney, Fiji Airways offers business class tickets at a more favorable price, and the brief stop in Nadi helps alleviate the lengthy nature of the trip, which many passengers find more appealing than a single, extended flight.
The airline is currently running a limited-time sale, offering excellent deals on economy, premium economy, and business class flights from Sydney to LAX with a stop in Nadi.
Although it may not match the luxurious accommodations provided by certain airlines, it excels where it counts most—comfort, exceptional service with a friendly attitude, and the crucial element of a good night’s sleep on board.
