The Atlanta Dogwood Festival is one of the city’s longest-running spring traditions. Held each year in Piedmont Park, the festival celebrates the blooming of Atlanta’s famous dogwood trees with a weekend full of art, music, food, and family activities.

The festival began in the 1930s as a small community event meant to showcase the beauty of Atlanta’s dogwood trees in spring. Today, it has grown into a huge three-day festival that draws artists and visitors from all over the country.

One of the biggest highlights is the artist market, where hundreds of artists display and sell everything from paintings and photography to pottery, jewelry, glass, and sculpture. The festival also has live music performances, food vendors, and a midway with rides and games for kids.

The Atlanta Dogwood Festival takes place throughout Piedmont Park, an iconic park in Midtown Atlanta that’s one of the city’s best greenspaces. Artist, sponsor, and food booths line the walkways. There are stages set up for live entertainment, a kids’ zone, and amusement rides and midway games.

The Dogwood Festival is great for a day of family fun, and best of all — it’s free!

The festival hours are:

Friday 12 p.m. — 9 p.m.
Saturday 10 a.m. — 9 p.m.
Sunday 10 a.m. — 6 p.m.

The artist market closes at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Best Time to Visit the Atlanta Dogwood Festival

The Atlanta Dogwood Festival is really popular, so timing your visit can make a big difference in your experience.

If you want the lightest crowds, Friday afternoon is typically the best time to go. The festival opens at noon, and many people are still at work, so it’s usually more relaxed than on the weekend.

Saturday afternoon is typically the busiest time of the entire festival. The weather is great this time of year, everyone is off work, and the walkways get pretty crowded.

Our favorite time to visit is Sunday morning, around 10 or 11 a.m. There’s a good bit of traffic in the park, but the crowds haven’t really started pouring in yet.

One year we arrived around 2 p.m. on Saturday and the walkways were packed shoulder-to-shoulder, so now we always try to get there earlier in the day.

No matter when you go, plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring the festival and the hundreds of booths.

Tips for Visiting the Atlanta Dogwood Festival

Navigating the Crowds

You know a festival is good when it’s been going for over 8 decades, but that also means it draws a big crowd every year. With around 200,000 people attending over the weekend, the park can get pretty busy — especially on Saturday afternoon.

Even when it’s crowded, the festival is spread out across Piedmont Park, so it rarely feels impossible to move around. The walkways between artist booths tend to be the most crowded areas.

If the pathways start feeling packed, try wandering toward the outer edges of the park or exploring a different section of booths. We’ve found that simply changing directions can lead you to quieter areas and new artists you might have otherwise missed.

The biggest thing to remember is to take your time. This isn’t a festival you rush through — half the fun is slowly wandering through the booths and seeing what catches your eye.

Art Vendors and Food

One of my favorite parts of the festival is wandering the artist booths. Nearly 300 artists come to the festival each year, selling everything from paintings and photography to pottery, glasswork, jewelry, and sculpture.

It’s easy to lose track of time browsing the booths, especially since every artist brings something different. You’ll see bright paintings, handmade jewelry, wooden crafts, blown glass, and all kinds of unique pieces you won’t find in stores.

The last time we went, I ended up taking home a giant painting of a momma polar bear and her cub. I love having it hang in my living room!

Of course, you can’t go to a festival without trying some of the food. You’ll find plenty of options around the park — everything from food trucks and barbecue to funnel cakes and classic carnival treats.

Between the art and the food, it’s very easy to spend more money than you planned!

Weather Tips

Check the weather before you go, since this time of the year it can be iffy. Prepare for windy, hot, rainy, or cold.

But always wear comfortable walking shoes! With hundreds of booths, this festival takes up the whole park, and you’re going to want to see it all. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the event on a perfectly sunny spring day.

Know Before You Go

Bring cash. A lot of places take cards nowadays, but if they don’t, you don’t want to have to pay ATM fees.
Pets are NOT allowed, so leave the dogs to the dogwoods. But you can see the ones competing in the Disc Dogs competition.
Piedmont Park has paved, handicap accessible walking paths throughout. There is limited handicap parking on 10th Street and in the Sage Parking Garage.
No outside food or beverages are allowed in the park during the festival. You can bring small chairs, but no tents or coolers.
Smoking is not allowed in Piedmont Park
There are porta-potties and ATMs onsite.

Where to Park for the Atlanta Dogwood Festival

Parking is one of the trickiest parts of visiting the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, since Piedmont Park sits right in the middle of Midtown.

There’s no official festival parking lot, but there are several paid parking garages and lots nearby that you can use. A few common options include garages on 10th Street, Peachtree Street, and North Avenue.

Expect parking prices to go up during the festival weekend — that’s pretty typical for large events in Midtown. You have the option of reserving a spot in advance using the SpotHero app, which lets you compare prices and secure a garage before you arrive.

If you do plan to drive, arriving earlier in the day can make parking much easier. By mid-afternoon on Saturday, most nearby garages will already be full.

Once you park, it’s usually just a short walk into the park and the festival grounds.

Taking MARTA

One of the easiest ways to avoid the hassle of parking is to take MARTA to the festival.

The closest station is Midtown MARTA Station, which is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from Piedmont Park. From the station, you can head east toward the park and follow the crowds straight to the festival entrance.

Taking MARTA is especially helpful on Saturday when Midtown traffic can get pretty heavy. Instead of sitting in traffic or hunting for a parking spot, you can simply ride the train and walk over.

If you’re coming from outside the city, you can also park at one of MARTA’s park-and-ride stations and take the train into Midtown for the day. It’s often the easiest and least stressful way to visit big events like the Dogwood Festival.
