A Historic Retreat for Stars and Travelers
Nestled just 30 minutes from Glasgow and a mere 10-minute drive from the airport, Mar Hall stands as a unique blend of history, luxury, and natural beauty. This 19th-century mansion, perched dramatically above the River Clyde, has long been a favorite retreat for some of the world’s most famous faces. From Harry Styles and Beyoncé to Chris Martin of Coldplay, the list of celebrities who have stayed here is as impressive as it is intriguing.
The experience of staying at Mar Hall is nothing short of surreal. Imagine sleeping in a four-poster bed that has hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment. For many, this is the moment they step off the stage after a performance, but for others, like me, it’s the result of a train ride into Glasgow Central followed by a quick cab ride to escape the city’s hustle.
Mar Hall is not just a place for stars; it’s also a hidden gem for travelers seeking tranquility and charm. With its sprawling 240 acres of green space, it’s no wonder that artists like Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Liam Gallagher have all found solace here.
A Rich History of Grandeur and Transformation
Designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1828, Mar Hall was built using locally quarried off-white stone, which has since weathered into a striking grey hue. The mansion was the vision of British Army Major General Robert W Stuart, known as the 11th Lord Blantyre. He spent an extravagant £50,000 on the construction—equivalent to over £5 million today—but he never got to enjoy it, as he died in Belgium in 1830.
His wife, Fanny, however, made the most of the estate, hosting lavish parties that attracted the elite of Glaswegian society. During World War I, the mansion took on a new role as a hospital, offering a peaceful setting for those recovering from the war.
By the early 2000s, Mar Hall had been transformed into a hotel by a local couple. However, its current grandeur comes from the Dubai-based Dutco Group, which acquired the property in 2023 and invested £20 million in its renovation.
A Bold Renovation with Gothic Elegance
The recent restoration, led by Glasgow-based interior designers Graven, has embraced the mansion’s gothic roots while adding modern touches. The public spaces feature indoor palms, statement lighting, and bold wallpaper by the Scottish brand Timorous Beasties. The design contrasts textures such as leather, velvet, marble, and brass, creating a visually rich environment.
Vintage books are thoughtfully placed throughout the hotel, including in the rooms. We found aged copies ofWuthering Heights, theKama Sutra, andRecipes Of All Nationsamong other titles. Notably, tartan—a common Scottish cliché—was avoided in favor of a more refined aesthetic.
The dining experience at The Dining Room restaurant celebrates Scotland’s culinary heritage, with dishes ranging from haggis and whisky-laced porridge at breakfast to Argyll smoked salmon and Perthshire beef in the evening.
Comfort and Luxury in Every Detail
The rooms at Mar Hall are designed for relaxation, featuring white-washed blonde wood flooring, Scandinavian mid-century furniture, and cloud-like king-sized beds dressed in fine white linen. The bathrooms boast deep, free-standing baths, marble sinks, and brushed brass showers, with eco-friendly products from Northern Irish brand Laura Thomas Co.
For those seeking leisure, the hotel offers a par-70 championship golf course designed by renowned architect Dave Thomas. The resort is now officially known as the JA Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort, with plans underway for luxury woodland lodges equipped with hot tubs.
The spa facilities include a state-of-the-art thermal ‘sanctuary’ suite with saunas, steam rooms, and heated loungers. Massage treatments use products from award-winning Scottish brand Ishga, featuring oils infused with organic Hebridean seaweed.

Nearby Adventures and Natural Beauty
While Mar Hall offers plenty of amenities, it’s also ideally located for exploring nearby attractions. Just 20 minutes away lies Loch Lomond, Scotland’s most famous national park. Its cobalt-blue lochs, gentle mountains, and green glens provide stunning scenery perfect for photography and relaxation.
Visitors can also explore the picturesque loch-side village of Luss for a cup of tea and homemade shortbread before returning to the comfort of Mar Hall for a whisky cocktail with a view. Who knows who might be sitting next to you at the bar?
