Now we’ve received information that Disneyland is set to eliminate the existing park hopping limitations, which is likely to be positive news for numerous visitors. The President of Disneyland also provided us directly with his insights regarding the future of the park reservation system. Disneyland to Eliminate Park Hopping Limit
Currently, park hopping at Disneylandrequires visitors to start their day at the theme park they reserved, and then they must wait until 11:00a.m.to move to the other park. So if you have a theme park reservation for Disneyland Park, you would need to enter Disneyland and then wait until 11:00a.m.to move between parks to Disney California Adventure.
Now, the President of Disneyland, Thomas Mazloum, has stated at a business update roundtable that beginning later this year, the 11:00Morning restriction will be lifted.
This is positive information for Disneyland visitors and reflects the ongoing move towards more adaptable planning for a trip. We learned about the change shortly after they decided to implement the shift, so not all details of the adjustment have been made public yet.
The open question we have is how this change will affect the current reservation system. Will visitors still need to physically enter the park associated with their reservation before moving to the second park? For instance, if I have a reservation for Disneyland Park but decide to start at Disney California Adventure, will I still need to scan into Disneyland first? Or can I begin my visit at Disney California Adventure instead? Would this then result in a single shared reservation pool between the two parks? We’ll have to wait and see.
This might seem like a minor adjustment, but this morning I encountered the problem while using my Magic Key Annual Pass. I had reserved a visit to Disneyland, but I wanted to stop by Disney California Adventure for breakfast. Despite having reservations for both parks, I was not permitted to enter Disney California Adventure until after 11 a.m. because of the park hopping policy or to modify my reservation.
Mickey Visit was among approximately a dozen locations that were invited to have direct discussions with the resort’s president and other executives in attraction engineering, entertainment, and guest services. The gathering offered valuable insights into current issues at the resort, including the information shared below regarding reservations, with more details to be provided in future updates.
At the event, Thomas Mazloum discussed his initiatives to make the theme park guest experience more straightforward. He explained the rationale for this shift and provided insights into the current Disneyland reservation system. Although direct quotations were not permitted, I can rephrase his statements and overall message.
He mentioned that during the 70 years that Disneyland has been operating, numerous procedures have developed. He stated that currently, the team is stepping back to conduct a comprehensive review of the entire customer experience. He outlined areas they are examining, such as how information is presented on the website, the existing reservation process, the call center interaction, trade partners, and the arrival process. The team aims to identify where things have become unnecessarily complicated and can be significantly enhanced.
Then, he addressed the solutions aimed at enhancing these elements of the guest experience. He mentioned that teams frequently search for a single, ultimate solution, but it is rarely that straightforward because if it were, someone would have already put it into practice.
He stated that rather, he is a supporter of ongoing enhancement via gradual beneficial modifications, and that minor adjustments can lead to significant effects in the long run.
Next, he addressed the 2020 closure policies which remain active. This is when he began talking about the theme park reservations that are mandatory for every guest visiting the Disneyland Resort.
Mazloum explained that prior to 2020, there was a significant influx of visitors on weekends, which led to serious concerns about overcrowding in the parks. This resulted in a noticeable imbalance between weekday and weekend attendance. Reservations then played a role in evening out the demand throughout the entire week.
He admitted that the park pass reservation system added more complexity for visitors, but noted that it also greatly helps in distributing demand more evenly. Previously, staffing levels were often too low on weekends or excessively high during the week. Because of this, he stated that reservations are likely to remain. He ended by saying that reservations enhance the guest experience by minimizing crowds, even though they introduce an extra step.
He referred to the removal of the 11:00 slotA.M. park hopping rule serves as a prime example of the gradual steps that eventually lead to significant enhancements over time. Disneyland aims for this change to encourage greater spontaneity throughout guests’ visits. He concluded this part by stating that there are still numerous policies and procedures under review, with further improvements on the horizon.
This is a significant development regarding the Disneyland park reservation system, as some have indicated that Josh D’Amaro might eliminate park reservations upon becoming CEO. I expect that one of themajor alterations he will implement upon becoming CEOis a collection of park policy adjustments to show that he actively incorporates guest input. The comments from Thomas Mazloum today support what I mentioned earlier, which is that the park reservation system is too valuable to be abandoned by Disney, even if it means spreading demand across various dates.
Expect park entry reservations to stay in effect at Disneyland for the foreseeable future.
Post-COVID Disneyland Policy Updates
The guidelines for visiting multiple parks were first implemented as part of the larger Disneyland reservation system, which was introduced following the 2020 pandemic shutdown to control visitor numbers and spread out crowds throughout the theme park. When Disneyland reopened, tickets needed prior reservations for each day of the visit. This reservation policy has continued since Disneyland’s return in 2021 up to today.
Regarding park hopping, when Disneyland reopened in 2021, this option was restricted, requiring visitors to wait until after 2:00 p.m. before moving to the other park. Later, in January 2024, the policy was updated, allowing guests to start park hopping after 11:00.a.m.In technical terms, park hopping depends on the park’s capacity, but it is very uncommon for parks to reach full capacity and deny entry to anyone.

As for those using Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you couldn’t reserve experiences in the park you planned to visit through park hopping until after the period when park hopping is permitted. Therefore, guests are now able to book attractions for the second park,but the return time needs to be 11:00 a.m. or later. I believe that when this restriction is lifted, the limitation on Lightning Lane will also be removed, significantly improving the flexibility of the service.
