Monsters, Inc. Classic Dark Ride Closure Postponed

During a recent business update roundtable, Thomas Mazloum, the president of the Disneyland Resort, informed us at Mickey Visit that they are focusing significant attention on young families with children. He specifically mentioned thesummer $50 child ticket and the upcoming Bluey experience. Using this perspective, he also explored how the popular Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! attraction in Disney California Adventure relates to this group. He then announced the news that the closure of the ride has been postponed.
Disneyland has stated that the permanent shutdown of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! at Disney California Adventure has been postponed until 2027. At this moment, there is no more detailed date or schedule for the closure. Earlier, Disneyland had declared that the ride would shut down permanently in early 2026, but no additional date has been provided yet.
The permanent shutdown has not been well-received, as the reduced number of family-oriented attractions has been a long-standing issue for Disney California Adventure for several years. Many fans continue to express disappointment over the loss of Bugs Land in 2018, which was torn down to create space for Avengers Campus, which remainsreceived mixed reviews.
Disney is already in the process of working onexpanding Avengers CampusTo introduce two additional new rides. This will significantly enhance the area when the two new attractions open, but this does not address the issue of suitable attractions for younger children. Currently, they are replacing the Monsters Inc. ride with an Avatar-themed experience, which is also not designed for children.

This is one of the reasons Disneyland is postponing the permanent shutdown of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! in order to maintain its focus on young families and provide additional choices for younger guests at Disney California Adventure.
Regarding upcoming experiences at Disneyland that will attract younger families, the newBluey experience in Disneylandwill attract numerous visitors.
Is the Avatar Land at Disneyland Postponed?

We are aware that the intention for a while has been to permanently shut down Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! in order to create space for the new Avatar land. This land themed around Avatar will be inspired byAvatar: The Way of Waterand the other upcoming Avatar movies. Based on the concept art that has been revealed up to now,we can presume that the second film served as the main influence for the land. In addition to concept art, the only official information Disney has shared about the area is the new boat ride that will be the central attraction. Throughout the ride, guests will embark on a journey to discover the natural marvels of Pandora.
The development of this area is connected to a significant infrastructure initiative tolaunch a new parking facility and transit centerOn the side of Disneyland near the Harbor Boulevard entrance. This will subsequently free up the current transportation area just outside the security entrance on Harbor Boulevard. In the image below, you can see how we envision this fitting into the existing layout.

Some of the existing bus loop area will be transformed into a walkway connecting to the new structure, while another portion will be redeveloped into Avatar. This land needs to be cleared in order for the construction of the new Avatar area to start properly. We are not certain about how the construction process was planned to proceed during this time. At one point, the Monsters Inc. building might have been scheduled for demolition to serve as a laydown yard for the new entrance. However, it now appears they have discovered an alternative solution.
When questioned at the event regarding the delay, Disneyland President Thomas Mazloum stated that they have not announced an opening date and that the postponement of Monsters Inc.’s closure is due to how they are organizing their future projects and completing the workflow to finish all tasks. He mentioned that they are progressing at a rate they are satisfied with.
I believe Disney has understood that they can proceed with the development of the new parking facility and bridge without needing to close Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! just yet. Therefore, it makes sense to allow guests additional time to experience the attraction and avoid removing a popular option for younger families until they have an alternative in place. It appears this decision was advocated by Thomas Mazloum, who wanted to keep the family ride operational for as long as possible before it must shut down for the construction.
During the initial decision-making phase, I think there might have also been a thought that closing the ride earlier could accelerate the project and lead to lower operational costs. After reviewing the remaining list of rides and possibly after receiving strong input from Disney fans, Disney has decided to prolong the attraction’s operation.

Disneyland is also currently undergoingcreating a new Coco attractionBehind Pixar Pier, in the backstage area. This attraction is sure to be popular among visitors, particularly with families from Southern California who have a strong connection to the movie. The ride will take guests on a journey with Miguel to the Land of the Dead and will be inspired by classic attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion, incorporating the newest Audio-Animatronics technology along with the cherished music from the film.
We are curious about how quickly Disney can get the new Coco attraction ready for opening. Although it may still lag behind the new Avengers Campus attractions, the ride might be available in 2028. You can read our separate article onwhen we expect all the new Disneyland attractions to be available. Getting that ride open as soon as possible following the closure of Monsters Inc. would help reduce the effect on guests who are losing a long-time family favorite. The appeal of the new Coco attraction will be substantial.
