Exploring Baltimore on a Budget
Baltimore, Maryland, is a city that offers a wealth of experiences without breaking the bank. While many people think of Washington, D.C., as the primary destination for cultural and historical exploration in the region, Baltimore has its own unique charm and plenty of affordable activities to enjoy. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, there are numerous ways to experience the city for under $50 a day.
Morning: Federal Hill Park
Our day began at Federal Hill Park, one of the best spots in Baltimore for panoramic views of the Inner Harbor. The park is not only a great place to take in the scenery but also a historic site with roots dating back to the American Civil War. Originally used as a fort by the Union Army, it was later established as a city park in 1880. The playground here is a favorite among families, making it an ideal spot for a picnic or a relaxed morning stroll.

Edgar Allan Poe’s Grave
Next, we visited the grave of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most famous literary figures associated with Baltimore. His resting place is at Westminster Hall, a former Presbyterian church turned event venue. The cemetery includes several other notable graves, including those of generals and heroes from the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The area also features catacombs and aboveground crypts, making it a fascinating stop for history enthusiasts.
Spent: $5 for parking
Lexington Market
After exploring the cemetery, we made our way to Lexington Market, the oldest public market in the United States. Established in 1782 and recently rebuilt in 2022, the market is a vibrant hub of food and culture. With over 45 vendors offering everything from coffee and pastries to Asian and Southern cuisine, there’s something for everyone. I couldn’t resist trying the chicken katsu curry at Dosirock, a Korean restaurant that offered a delicious and satisfying meal for $19.06, which included a drink.

We also grabbed an iced honey lavender vanilla latte from Black Acres Roastery for $7.24. While coffee can be expensive, this particular latte was worth every penny. If you’re looking to save money, there are cheaper options available at the market.
Spent: $26.30
Mount Vernon Place
From the market, we headed to Mount Vernon Place, where we discovered the Washington Monument, the first monument dedicated to George Washington in the United States. Surrounded by four small parks and stunning architecture, including the Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church, this area is a beautiful blend of history and design.
Spent: $3.75 for street parking near Mount Vernon Square
Walters Art Museum
Our final stop was the Walters Art Museum, a historic three-building museum with free admission. The collection spans seven millennia, featuring more than 36,000 objects from 5,000 BCE to the 21st century. The museum itself is a work of art, and it offers family-friendly programming, such as Drop-In Art-Making sessions on weekends.

A Successful Day Trip
Although our day wasn’t packed with activities, we managed to enjoy some of the best aspects of Baltimore—stunning views, historic sites, Korean food, and a visit to a world-class art museum. In total, we spent $35.05, leaving us with $14.95 for additional food, souvenirs, or dessert for the drive home.
If you’re planning a day trip to Baltimore, remember that it’s entirely possible to stay within a $50 budget. You could even bring a friend along for a little extra fun, like splitting a large plate of katsu curry, while still staying under your limit.
There are countless cheap and free things to do in Baltimore, and we’d love to hear about your favorite budget-friendly activities. If you’re interested in a guided tour, consider the Raven’s Revenge Ghost Tour, which offers an affordable and entertaining way to explore the city.
