You’re looking for something secure, cozy, and budget-friendly, yet adaptable to your way of traveling.
In 2022, after I started living as a digital nomad, I spent many months exploring all available accommodation choices.
Since that time, I have tried various options including Airbnb rentals and house-sitting opportunities, gaining significant insight into what is effective (and what isn’t) when you’re always traveling.
This handbook explains what to watch for, where to locate it, and advice on preventing costly errors.
Things to Think About When Selecting Digital Nomad Accommodation
Location
The place you reside greatly influences your overall experience. A great apartment located in an unsuitable area can spoil a trip, whereas a basic room in the ideal location can simplify life more than you anticipated.
While residing in Campeche, I discovered a small house located on a vibrant street, only a short distance from the central plaza.
It wasn’t luxurious, but I was able to reach all the places I needed: markets, cafes, and even a nearby vet for my dog. That level of accessibility transformed my daily life.
Check out locations close to supermarkets, coffee shops, and shared work areas. If you’retraveling with a petCheck veterinary clinics and pet supply stores as well.
Having these items nearby saves time and prevents you from depending on costly taxi services or carpooling apps.
Internet and Infrastructure
A strong Wi-Fi connection is essential for online work. I’ve had experiences where the apartment appeared great, but the internet was so slow that it struggled to load emails.
Now I consistently check the speed prior to making a reservation and review feedback to determine if others have encountered problems.
Even if the Wi-Fi connection is strong, have alternative plans in place. In Cancun, I utilized co-working spaces when storms disrupted the internet at my rental.
In smaller towns, I have used local cafes that are friendly to people working on laptops.
It’s also beneficial to assess how convenient it is to move around. Are the buses dependable? Is the airport nearby? Such details can prevent problems down the line.
Cost of Living
Housing is only a single component of your overall expenses. Costs for food, travel, and leisure activities such as visiting museums or going on snorkeling excursions can differ significantly based on your location.

Residents and other travelers can inform you about the prices of groceries or whether a particular area is excessively expensive.
Safety
Safety is individual. What seems secure to me may not seem secure to you. Before I go anywhere, I look at crime maps and check local Facebook groups for recent discussions about safety.
Nomads.comalso includes safety details about locations across the globe. They offer data, along with insights from individuals who are present in those areas, including whether there is significant racism or prejudice against specific groups.
Culture and Lifestyle
Some individuals flourish in bustling urban areas filled with constant activities. Others prefer serene shorelines or peaceful mountain communities. Be truthful with yourself about what brings you lasting joy.
I enjoyed the lively atmosphere of Cancun for a time, but eventually relocated to Cozumel for a more relaxed lifestyle and stronger sense of community. Consider what you’re seeking from each destination before making a decision.
Time Zones
If you hold regular meetings, time zones can be really challenging. I once taught English online in China and had classes at 4 a.m. It worked for a few months, but it wasn’t something that could continue long-term.
Now I select locations that allow me to remain within a few hours of my clients as much as possible.
Getting the Best Price
Your largest cost as a digital nomad is likely to be housing, so discovering methods to extend your budget can make a significant impact.
The positive aspect is that you don’t always need to pay the advertised rate. Through some investigation and a bit of haggling, you can usually find a more favorable offer, particularly if your stay extends beyond a week or two.
Watch for Hidden Costs
Utility costs, cleaning charges, and security deposits can accumulate quickly. Airbnb service fees may increase the total by hundreds for a monthly stay.
If electricity is part of the package, make sure to check if it’s unlimited. I’ve come across rental agreements where you are charged for electricity beyond a specific limit.
If you engage in direct discussions with a property owner (something I frequently do), inquire about what is included and ensure it is documented in writing.
Negotiating for Better Rates
When looking for a place to live, don’t be afraid to discuss the cost or consider various alternatives.
Contact property owners or landlords to inquire if they are willing to discuss terms, particularly for extended stays.
I have managed to save up to half the price mentioned on Airbnb. This is most straightforward if you are already in the same city. I just send a message to the host via Airbnb and request to view the apartment or house in person.
After I meet the host, I inquire whether they accept bookings outside the application. Thus far, they have consistently agreed.
Make sure to have your agreement in writing because you won’t receive the same protections as when you book through Airbnb or VRBO.
It will still carry some risk, so make sure to investigate the host or landlord to confirm they don’t have any complaints. I check Facebook groups for the city to look for any problems others have experienced.
If you aren’t located in the same city as the rental property, check Facebook groups. Several landlords participate in local groups, making it possible to discover favorable offers there.
An alternative approach is to reserve a place via Airbnb or VRBO for a few days, and then try to negotiate a reduced rate after arriving. I haven’t tried this personally, but I’ve heard from others who have had positive results.
Different Kinds of Housing for Digital Nomads
There isn’t a single solution that fits everyone. What works for a lone traveler may not be suitable for someone traveling with children or a pet. Here are the most typical types and what I’ve discovered from using each.

Some hotels are beginning to realize that travelers prefer having small kitchens and reliable internet access.

Communities and Getaways for Remote Workers
They offer a blend of housing, shared workspaces, and social gatherings in a single package. They are perfect for those who are just starting out as a digital nomad and prefer a structured environment. While they may be more expensive, all amenities are covered.
Home Sitting or Pet Sitting
Sites like TrustedHousesittersLink you with homeowners looking for someone to look after their pets or property. You receive free accommodation in return for caregiving. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement if your schedule is adaptable.

Hostels are no longer exclusively for young travelers. Several now offer private accommodations and reliable internet access. They are affordable, provide opportunities to meet people, and are ideal for brief visits. However, the downside includes reduced privacy and potential disturbances from fellow guests.

Many individuals begin their search with Airbnb, yet there are numerous alternative methods for securing accommodation. My preferred options:

- Word of mouth:Connect with individuals in shared workspaces, fitness centers, or coffee shops. Residents are often aware of locations prior to their online listings.
