A U.S. citizen employed by the U.S. Commerce Department has been prevented from leaving China for several months, sparking concerns about the impact on U.S.-China relations. This incident occurs as both nations attempt to arrange a high-level summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to address ongoing trade disputes.
The individual, who works for the Patent and Trademark Office, was reportedly detained upon arrival in Chengdu in April. According to reports, the person faced an exit ban due to alleged failure to disclose their government employment on a visa application. The U.S. government has reportedly raised concerns with Chinese authorities regarding the situation, emphasizing the importance of allowing the individual to return home.
This development comes amid broader efforts to negotiate a trade deal following the imposition of heavy tariffs by the Trump administration. While these tariffs were later paused, the underlying issues—such as technology restrictions, control over rare earths, and the status of Taiwan—remain unresolved. Both sides are now working to facilitate a meeting between Trump and Xi to address these matters.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun addressed the issue during a press briefing, stating that China upholds the rule of law and handles relevant cases strictly according to legal procedures. He added that there was no specific information available about the Commerce Department employee.
