Carnival Cruise Line Reduces Cruises in Popular Region

Carnival Cruise Line has revealed a strategy to cut back on its activities in a specific area, even though there is high interest in cruises.

Carnival Country Manager Peter Littlecredits the shift to “greater momentum and local government support in other significant travel and tourism markets around the world.”

Other cruise companies, such as Disney, have also recently exited or reduced their activities in the market, which features a more complex regulatory framework and higher operational expenses compared to other cruise areas, according to theCruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

The only cruise company that still operates throughout the year in this area, Carnival, will soon reduce its number of cruises in the market as it sends one of its vessels to another location for half the year.

Carnival to cut down the permanent cruise ship fleet in Australia

Carnival is reducing its ongoing cruise activities in Australia and New Zealand starting in 2028, shifting the Carnival Adventure from a full-time schedule of Australian cruises to seasonal trips. In April 2028, the vessel will move to North America for the summer season in the northern hemisphere.

With the 2028 deployment update, Carnival will operate two ships on a year-round basis in Australia — Carnival Splendor and Carnival Encounter — along with two others that will sail during specific seasons — Carnival Adventure and Carnival Luminosa.

Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter became part of the Carnival fleet in March 2025 followingP&O Cruises Australia became part of the Carnival brand. Integrating P&O Australia into Carnival was a strategic decision that lowered operational expenses for Carnival Corp. in the area, and also decreased the number of ships operating on a year-round basis in Australia, as the Pacific Explorer was removed from the fleet.

Shifting the Carnival Adventure to seasonal sailings in Australia is expected to further decrease cruise capacity and the company’s operational expenses in the region. Carnival continues to be dedicated to offering year-round cruises in Australia and New Zealand, but has chosen to cut back on capacity because of the unpredictable regulatory situation in the area and more favorable market opportunities available in North America.

“In this context, Carnival is modifying its approach to better seize additional opportunities in other areas, while still supporting a more competitive and stable operational environment—issues we have consistently highlighted,” Little stated.

Australia may experience a decline in cruise ship visits

Although cruising is widely enjoyed in Australia and New Zealand, the number of available cruise ships in the area might still decrease because of the difficulties that cruise companies encounter in the region.

The CLIA cautions that Australia faces challenges in competing with other well-known cruise locations because of its unclear regulations and complex operational conditions.

“Although the demand for cruising is at historic highs globally and Australians continue to be among the world’s most enthusiastic cruisers, Australia faces the risk of losing its cruise operations to other nations that provide a more favorable business environment,” CLIA stated in a release.Cruise Passenger.

Even though Carnival is decreasing its presence in Australia, it remains dedicated to offering hassle-free cruise vacations for families in Australia and New Zealand. During the 2027/2028 season, the cruise line will depart from more local ports in the area than previously.

Prior to moving to North America, Carnival Adventure will provide voyages departing from Adelaide, Melbourne, Auckland, and Sydney. Carnival Splendor will remain based in Sydney throughout the year. Carnival Encounter will be stationed in Brisbane all year and will be joined by Carnival Luminosa during the summer season.
