A Century of Impact at Camp Erdman
HONOLULU – If you’re a local from the islands, chances are you have some memories tied to Camp Erdman. This iconic camp is celebrating a monumental milestone—its 100th anniversary. The event will take place on March 7, and it’s a free community gathering that promises to be a celebration of over a century of positive influence on countless lives.
The YMCA has been a cornerstone in the community for generations, and Camp Erdman stands as a testament to that legacy. Senior Executive Director Mish Hood shared her thoughts on what this milestone means for the organization.
“First, what an honor to have been serving this community, this island community for 100 years and personally what a privilege it is to be in this position to lead us through,” says Hood.
She emphasized that despite the changes over the decades, the core mission of the YMCA has remained consistent. “We have spent 100 years in such a variety of service but the mission has stayed the same the whole time. The YMCA core mission of youth development has stayed the same and I just remember having lunch with donors that tell me of their experiences back in the 50s, back in the 60s where we taught the same lessons.”
The Lessons That Last
Today’s approach may differ, but the fundamental values remain unchanged. “We teach them differently today. We got different safety protocols, society has changed but the lessons are the same: independence, confidence, resilience, friendships, memories. That is what camp is all about, that is what it has been about for 100 years and it is what we are celebrating today.”
Families often share how impactful the experience is for children. “I think its the independence they go home with, the healthy independence,” says Hood. “For so many, it is their first experience away from home, their first experience having to take care of themselves, brush their own teeth, take care, manage their own emotions, manage their own friendships, learn their own skills without mom or dad coaching them over their shoulder, right? This is their first experience away from home and that independence is so impactful.”
A Day to Celebrate and Connect
Tomorrow’s event is more than just a celebration—it’s a chance for families to reconnect with the camp and experience what it has to offer. “Its Community Day. We do it every year but this year has that special impetus that its our 100th year,” says Hood.
The event will run from 10 am to 3 pm and is completely free for everyone. “You can come and experience just a taste, you know? A taste of the ropes course, the archery, the pool, the activities, the camp staff, the warmth, the family feeling and then get comfortable with the place so if you want to send your kids to summer camp, if you want to bring the whole family to family camp, then you know us, you’ve reconnected with us from when you might have joined us 20-30-40 years ago. Its just reconnecting with the place and discovering it all fresh.”
A Legacy of Support
Camp Erdman has also played a vital role in supporting children with incarcerated parents. It provides a safe space for these kids to grow, learn, and build confidence. For many, the camp is more than just a place—they see it as a second home.
The memories created at Camp Erdman often last a lifetime. From surf camps to adventure activities, each experience contributes to the lasting impact the camp has on its participants.
