The Coffee Culture of Austin

Austinites are known for their love of coffee shops, which serve as more than just places to grab a quick drink. These spaces have become social hubs, artistic centers, and even coworking environments. Whether someone is heading in with just a wallet or bringing along a laptop, notepad, drawing tablet, tarot cards, and even a golden retriever, there’s always something special about these spots.

This year, 10 coffee shops are vying for the prestigious CultureMap Tastemaker Award. Each of them offers something unique, whether it’s the quality of the coffee, the ambiance, or the overall experience. These aren’t just places to grab a cup — they’re destinations that people choose because they genuinely love them. Discussions about favorite coffee shops often revolve around how people spend their time there.

The Tastemaker Awards judges take all of this into account when selecting the winner. On April 9, at Distribution Hall, one coffee shop will be crowned the winner at the Tastemaker Awards ceremony and signature tasting event. In the meantime, visitors can explore the 10 contenders below and do their own field research.

The 10 Contenders for Coffee Shop of the Year 2026

Ani’s Day & Night

Located in an actual house, Ani’s Day & Night offers a homey feel with cheerful trim colors and a peaceful layout that reduces noise by placing tables in separate rooms. With food trucks, outdoor seating, and events on the calendar, it’s the perfect place to spend both day and night.

Talisman Coffee Co.

Talisman Coffee Co. stands out because its owners also own a 35-acre coffee farm in Nicaragua. They use fresh beans from this farm and are meticulous about small-batch roasting in-house. Their beans are available in bulk for coffee enthusiasts who want to enjoy their brews at home.

Cabana Club

With its own pool, Cabana Club feels like a resort where you can work on a laptop, slack off, or chat with others. Its straightforward coffee menu features roasts from Progress Coffee Roasting in Buda, along with rotating take-home bags and a few specialties.

Codependent Cocktails + Coffee

This spot blends coffee and cocktails, offering a sweet spot between satisfying caffeine addicts in the morning and entertaining evening crowds with original cocktails. Non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic options include tea blends from the local purveyors at the Steeping Room.

Epoch Coffee

Epoch Coffee is well-known for its strong espresso and cultural cachet, especially at its 24-hour North Loop location. This space is a hub for local artists, activists, college students, and those playing Dungeons & Dragons. The bathroom graffiti is even considered an archaeological record.

Palomino Coffee

Palomino Coffee stands out with its Southwestern-style decor, numerous live plants for sale, and strong Gen Z vibes. Seasonal lattes are a must-try, but the signature cardamom mocha is what keeps visitors coming back.

Radio Coffee & Beer

Like Austin’s wonderful radio stations, Radio is open from morning til night, often broadcasting great music. While many guests don’t even get to the coffee counter, they’re missing out on creative specialties like the tiramisu cold brew with mascarpone cold foam.

Terrible Love

Located in a converted boiler room, Terrible Love focuses on the quality of its coffee. The grapefruit brown sugar latte is a creative main specialty that some guests are surprised to love, while the quality of other traditional drinks speaks for itself.

Texas Coffee Traders

With over 30 years of experience, Texas Coffee Traders has perfected its roasts and helped other Austin coffee shops get started with beans, equipment, and community support. The flagship café on East 7th Street and a warehouse roastery in northeast Austin are key parts of their operation.

Brew & Brew

Brew & Brew offers enticing lists of coffee beverages and draft beers. Baristas are kept busy perfecting draft pours or innovating on new coffee flavor combinations. It’s also a popular spot for remote workers to finish their day with a happy hour espresso martini.

Final Thoughts

The CultureMap Tastemaker Awards ceremony is sponsored in Austin by Maker’s Mark, Garrison at Fairmont Austin, NXT LVL Event, and more to be announced. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Central Texas Food Bank.

Early Bird tickets for the event are available now at discounted rates of $65 for general admission and $110 for VIP (includes early access to the event and a dedicated bar). Prices will increase on March 19, so it’s recommended to grab your tickets before they sell out.
