Air Canada Introduces Airbus A321XLR for Domestic and International Expansion
Air Canada has been making waves with the introduction of its first Airbus A321XLR, which recently completed its maiden test flight. This new aircraft marks a significant step in the airline’s strategy to modernize its fleet and expand its network both domestically and internationally. As a member of the Star Alliance, Air Canada is leveraging the capabilities of the A321XLR to enhance its services on key routes.
Domestic Routes Take Center Stage
As is typical when a new aircraft type is introduced, Air Canada will begin by deploying the 182-seat Airbus A321XLR on domestic routes. The initial focus will be on flights from Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL), where the aircraft will operate on two key routes.
The first route will connect Montreal to Calgary (YYC) from May 1 to 15, followed by daily service starting on June 15 through October 24. Later in the year, the aircraft will also serve Vancouver International Airport (YVR) from August 1, with daily flights until September 7.
Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer, and Cargo President at Air Canada, expressed enthusiasm about the new aircraft, stating:

Transatlantic Expansion
A significant portion of the A321XLR’s scheduled flights in 2026 will be dedicated to transatlantic routes. Out of the 12 planned routes, nine will serve European destinations.
From Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), the A321XLR will fly to Copenhagen (CPH) starting October 27, London Heathrow (LHR) beginning August 31, and Manchester (MAN) from October 25. From Montreal, three routes will serve French destinations: Toulouse (TLS) from June 1, Nantes (NTE) from July 15, and Lyon (LYS) from September 8.
Other European destinations include Edinburgh (EDI) in Scotland, with seven round trips between June 16 and 30, and Porto (OPO) from June 15 to October 23. Berlin (BER) will also see A321XLR service from July 2 to October 10.
Expanding the Transborder Network
The final route on Air Canada’s 2026 schedule for the A321XLR will be the transborder connection between Montreal and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Daily service is planned from October 1 to 24.
This route highlights Air Canada’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the U.S. market. Compared to other operators of the A321XLR and its existing A321LR variant, Air Canada is implementing a high-density seating configuration. The 182-seat layout includes only 14 business class seats, with the remaining 168 passengers seated in economy.
