Discover the Hidden Gem of Guana Beach
Guana Beach, located just 20 miles south of Jacksonville Beach, is a hidden treasure that offers a peaceful escape from the usual tourist crowds. This stretch of the A1A coastline remains largely untouched and under-visited, making it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
The Natural Beauty of Guana Beach
The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM Research Reserve) encompasses a vast area of coastal ecosystems, covering over 76,000 acres. This reserve is home to a rich diversity of plants, animals, and sea creatures. The beach itself, located just south of Ponte Vedra, is a local favorite and a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

History of Guana Beach
The history of Guana Beach dates back thousands of years, with the Timucua people inhabiting the area for nearly 5,000 years. Remnants of their settlements, such as shell middens, can still be found within the reserve. Later, Menorcan farmers settled in St. Augustine during the British occupation of Florida in the late 1700s.
In the mid-1900s, a dam was constructed at the entrance to the reserve, creating Guana Lake, which has become a popular spot for fishing and a habitat for waterfowl. In 1984, the state of Florida purchased the Guana Peninsula, and it was designated as a National Estuarine Research Reserve in 1999. Additional lands were added in 2004, and the Visitor Education Center opened, offering interactive exhibits and educational programs about Florida’s native habitats.

Things to Do at Guana Beach
Unlike other beaches that are filled with cars, volleyball courts, and playgrounds, Guana Beach offers a more natural and undeveloped experience. Visitors can enjoy walking along the sand, searching for seashells, and even bringing their dogs—leashed pets are welcome.
There are several parking lots off Ponte Vedra Boulevard, also known as Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway or the A1A, with parking fees set at $3. Some access points include:
- Guana Reserve Middle Beach
- North Beach Guana River Preserve
- South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area
Visitors can explore the miles of trails within the reserve. Self-guided hikers can use printable trail guides to navigate the estuary and participate in a flora and fauna scavenger hunt. For guided hikes, visitors can join events held on the first Saturday of each month at the GTM Research Reserve’s Trailhead Pavilion. Hunting is also permitted in designated Fish and Wildlife areas.
The Visitor Center hosts various free events, including guided seining sessions where participants can learn how to catch fish and crabs using a seine net. Paddle tours are available through operators like North Guana Outpost.
