A Hidden Gem in Wyoming: Why Locals Love It

Wyoming’s rich variety of wildlife attracts many people who live there as well as those who visit. The bison in Yellowstone, the local elk in Jackson, the respected yet intimidating bears in the wilderness… and, naturally, the famous Jackalope, a one-of-a-kind creature that combines a rabbit and an antelope. This surprising animal is extremely quick, comes in different sizes, and is very hard to find in the wild.Or is it?

If you ever end up driving through the desolate charm of eastern Wyoming, you might eventually arrive at Douglas — a modest town that could easily be overlooked as just another stop on the way to another destination. However, step out of your vehicle and take a walk through the town, and you’ll discover there’s much more to explore here, particularly for those who secretly love Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and other creatures from cryptozoology.

Situated just more than thirty minutes east of Casper and Glenrock, this peaceful town with approximately 6,000 inhabitants is recognized for a few key aspects: theWyoming State Fair, its close location to Ayres Natural Bridge, its Railroad Interpretive Center, and – naturally – the wonderfully strange and imaginative tale of the jackalope. Featuring a gentle hare-like body and a unique set of antelope horns, there’s an undeniable charm to the jackalope that makes it hard not to adore!

It’s uncommon for the beginnings of local legends to be so well-known, but Wyoming’s unofficial (and the town’s official) mascot has its origins deeply rooted in Converse County. It began sometime in the 1930s when a local taxidermist decided to attach deer antlers to his latest jackrabbit catch, just as a lark. Soon after, the word “jackalope” was coined, and it has since become the town’s primary source of recognition. And let’s be honest, we absolutely adore it!

A sense of quiet pride is evident in how Douglas has adopted the jackalope, transforming it into a well-known and unique emblem of its heritage and character. Each year, the town celebrates Douglas’ Jackalope Days festival in June, where the creature is reimagined, illustrated in cartoons, and featured in artwork and advertisements throughout the area, as well as displayed on highway signs. In 1970, Douglas even registered its slogan, “Home of the Jackalope,” as a trademark.

Individuals interested in attempting to catch a jackalope can obtain an official hunting permit from the Douglas Railroad Museum. Each permit limits the capture or hunting of the horned jackalope to a single instance, and the permit is only valid on June 31 annually (don’t forget to note this date!), specifically between midnight and 2 a.m. However, that’s just the background story. It’s a genuine endeavor here.

Today, the powerful jackalope has a lasting, commemorative residence right in the center of Jackalope Square in downtown Douglas, attracting tourists from across the state and further, all eager to take a quick picture with this unique, eight-foot-tall creature. It is located on S. 3rd Street, just a brief walk away from the Douglas Railroad Interpretive Museum & Visitor’s Center. You will also find its counterpart there.

As you drive through town, you’ll notice these statues placed in various ordinary locations — next to park benches, the public library, or visible on a hill against the sunset — and each one appears to have its own unique character. Some are large and impressive, standing tall above their environment, while others are hidden in surprising places, ready to be found. Several have been lovingly given names by local people.

In every practical sense, the jackalope is just a tale. However, in a state as untamed and rugged as Wyoming, who can say what might be lurking in the bushes over there! If you choose to take a trip, we believe you’ll enjoy it! Also, if you’re seeking other activities, sights, or places to eat in the region, check out ouritinerary planner for suggestions.
